I need some questions answered before I'll recommend a cause here.
1.
How many miles on the Transmission?
2
Has it been serviced at least every 60,000 miles, more often if driven in severe service conditions like desert heat or mountainous area's?
3
The service you had done was to pull the transmission pan and replace the filter? Or was it a flush out without the pan be replaced?
4
Was the old fluid dark or burnt looking with a strong odor like burnt bacon?
Please get back to me on this.
Correction to question 3, should read: Was the transmission flushed without the filter being replaced or pan being removed.
1 it has 120000 miles on it
2 i'm not sure how often it has been serviced i bought it about six months ago
3 they did not change the filter or flush it they just topped it off
4 they made no mention of the old fluid so i assumed it was fine
It mist be serviced every 60,000 minimum. At 120,000 your transmission is just worn out, the clutch packs are more than likely worn and it is slipping due to that. This is especially true if you run it low on fluid and it picked up air bubbles in the hydraulic passages.

Seems like you have received good advice. The wrong fluid can be possible depending on how the Repair shop added the fluid. If they used a mixer head or the wrong supply line, you could have received the wrong fluid.
The screen in the fill and reservoir would have prevented new debris from getting inside. The change may have renewed the detergents in the fluid and your may have newly loosened some old varnish and it clogged a passage. The pressure check would tell.
Never flush a trans cause particles can get trapped in valve body-its common for people with good ones to have it destroyed after--cal the mechanic and ask what was done but dont mention the problem--may have a small claims case---------------however the bands or tv-cable may just need ajust-cause its not all gears
Visit a local transmission shop, have them connect a gauge on the pressure test port and go for a drive
to verify proper line pressure. Base pressure at idle in P,N,OD should
be around 70psi and around 140psi in R.
Max line pressure should be at
least 190psi at WOT in 1st or 2nd, 225psi is optimum. If base pressure
is low, trans or pump is worn out. If max pressure is low, check EPC
solenoid. If reverse is slow to engage, and line pressure does not come
up to at least 130psi in reverse, replace the boost valve with a
Transgo 0.490" boost valve (easy fix in pan).
Soft shifting, gradual performance degradation: Poor line
pressure rise due to leaking boost valve, clogged EPC filter screen,
failing EPC solenoid, or worst case: leaky seals throughout. Start with the simple and replace your boost valve and sleeve and the servo with corvette servo to help with bringing up your transmission line pressure.
At worst 1-2 or 2-3 shift is slow/soft above part throttle: Trans is on its way out. Hope its a simple boot valve and sleeve, there only $45.00 and the corvette servo is around the same price, with the exception that replacing the servo takes 30 min and you dont have to drop the transmission pan to replace like the boost valve whick takes 5 min to replace once the pan is dropped.
Thank your for using fixya and keep us posted.
Type F fluid has a different friction coefficient than Dexron does. It normally will cause a harsher shift, not slipping. If the unit was not serviced for a long time before you did it, debris that is sticking to the internal parts often loosens up because the new fluid will begin to clean that out. Unfortunately it then gets stuck in the valve body and gets into seal surfaces causing pressure loss and slippage. At the point you're at now, you could try using something like Lucas additive to see if it helps, otherwise, you need to have it rebuilt.
The wrong fluid, like F type Ford transmission fluid would cause malfunctioning. But, I doubt that whoever changed the fluid made this mistake, because GM uses Dexron II or Dexron III fluid which is used in the majority of cars on the road. Did you have it flushed and refilled with fresh fluid, or was the filter changed at the same time? My local certified transmission shop recommends flushing and filling over the more conventional filter and fluid change, because it seems to get more clutch dust and sediment out that way. Good luck on your repair.

DEXRON has released a new fluid type that is far superior to all old DEXRON types, it is called DEXRON VI and GM recommends it be used in all transmission requiring DEXRON ATF. I know from personnel experience that VI improves shifting, and testing shows it extends the life of the moving parts and slows clutch wear. The fluid comes in Semi synthetic and full synthetic depending on brand. It mixes perfectly with older DEXRON types.
