1998 Chevrolet Cavalier Logo

My neighbor's 1998 Cavalier is making a strange noise. It has automatic transmission, new tires, and 155,000 miles. When idling at a stop, it sounds fine, but when it starts movig and hits 15 or 20 mph it starts 'whirling' or 'howling'. The sound increases steadily with the speed of the car. The noise stops when the car stops. Yesterday I jaced up the front end, with the tires off the ground (properly and safely secured), started the engine, shifted to drive, sped uplike normally driving, and there was no noise. Everything under the eng/trans looked fine, including the CV joints. Suggestions?

Try getting on an open road, get up to about 45 MPH or where ever the noise is loudest. Put the car in neutral and turn the engine off. You can roll in a straight line for a long time. Make sure nodody is around you. If the sound stops when the engine is off, then the noise is coming from the motor. If the sound is still there, its got to be coming from the tires. Id guess a wheel bearing.

Joe, I did what you suggested. It was the driver's side front wheel bearing. I replaced both front bearings, and serviced the transmission. Now, it's like a new car! THANKS!

Could be Transmission related. Have you checked the Fluid level?
Also have you changed anything recently like new tires? Its not uncommon for some tires like (Hankook for example) to make road noise?

Could i be getting the 2-3 shift solenoid code if i havent changed the fluid in it or filter i got it at 96,000 miles and now it has 146,000 miles.1996 cavalier 2.4

It's very possible. Crud builds up over time due to the heat in the transmission. A fluid flush and filter change is a good idea. You may end up doing it twice - automatic transmission fluid is a great detergent and new fluid may dislodge crud inside the transmission, which will fill the new filter and clog it. Swap it out a second time and you're golden.

the low traction light would not be related to the car not starting. you may have a faulty sensor or your tires may have lost traction.

Grinding noise

I believe what you're saying is that after your car has been in park and you put it in gear to drive it makes a grinding noise for about 30 miles. I recommend checking you transmission fluid level and adding fluid as needed. You should do this fluid check while the engine is warm and car is idling. Since you have an 88 you probably have a lot of miles on it. I've had very good luck using Slick 50 High Mileage Automatic Transmission Treatment. A bottle of this costs around $15. If none of this works it may be time to take it into the shop or trade it in.
