The switch in the back door will get seized with age. When this happens the latch assembly will stay stuck halfway open and closed allowing you to close the door. when the door locks the latch will jam. and now will not be able to open until the latch is freed up and unseized again. you will have to access the latch by going through the inside and popping the panel away from the door. then using a screw driver force the latch to the fully closed position. then unlock door and open. Lubricate the old latch till it moves freely. then it should work properly for you.. good luck

Does the latch energize? Or is there no power at the motor for the latch?

I suggest to check this wiring diagram... to me, sounds like the mechanism in the motor drive for the lid release is bad. The motor is energized and working. Here is a link wiring diagram for zooming...

SOURCE: Back hatch wont open on 96 Jeep GC

if it's still stuck as of today look under the rear bumper in the center,WEAR PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR and with a flashlite high up in there you will see a couple of studs with nuts. using a extension and i believe a 13mm socket loosen but do not remove both nuts. pull on the door a couple of times to free it up and then retighten both nuts. now try the door slowly and it worked for me.you will most likely have too repeat this until it operates freely and closes tightly [to keep the elements out].it is not labor intensive and it's worked on my 96 gc twice. best and luck and let the rest of us know how you came out. jeepinjiminy

My rear hatch will not open on my 1994 jeep grand cherokee limited. How do i get it to open?

Fairly common problem. First try shooting WD-40 into the opening in the handle then flipping the handle several times. The mechanism tends to stick sometimes and this may free it up. If that doesn't work you will have to crawl in the back and loosten the trim panel enough to get to the latch. You cannot remove the trim panel without opening the hatch but you can get it out far enough to access the latch. Lube the latch and work it back and forth and it should free up enough to open the hatch

1999 jeep cherokee lift gate won't open

I had this problem on mine. There is a pin inside the back at the handle that attaches to the mechanism on the handle. The clamp holding the pin loosened and caused the pin to slip and I couldn't open that back hatch. I had to pull open the inside cover on the back hatch, from inside, and feel around until the latch was found, you can pull it and open it up that way. Then take the full cover off and lift the pin, tightening the clamp. No more problems after that. Hatch opens every time.

I have the same problem with mine, push with your left hand against the plastic on the left side of the handle, and with your right hand open the latch, I don't know why it works but it does. At least on mine.

I have a 1998 Jeep cherokee. The rear hatch will not open. How can I open it?

This is not an uncommon problem this the jeep. You will have to crawl in the back and remove the plactic cover on the back hatch. Then you can reach down inside with a pliers ir needle nose and pull up on the release bar. The handle on the outside is made of plastic and theres a piece in there that breaks off after awhile. Before you do this you can probably order an outside handle from your local dealership. : )

Rear Hatch will not open on my 95 Jeep Cherokee sport

You need to go to a locksmith and purchase a new lock cylinder. Remove the retainer clip from the old cylinder from the inside of the hatch.
