I have a similar problem with my 2001 330i. The idler pulley locked up and destroyed the serpentine belt. I replaced the idler and bought a new belt (6PK1538, effective length of 60.5") and installed it the way the belt manufacturer recommended it should go on. The previous problem mentioned seven (7) pulleys. I only have six (6): crankshaft, fan, alternator, power steering, idler and tensioner. A/C has a separate belt. When I installed the belt it wasn't tight enough and the idler is in close contact to the tensioner. I'm either not routing it properly or the spec for a 60.5 effective length belt is too long (incorrect).
Like most cars the belt routing diagram can be found on the fan shroud. Not on my car.
Can someone provide a sketch or diagram of the proper routing and is the 60.5" belt the right length for the six pulley system?
Much Thanks,
Dave
