My husband has a 1983 Mercury Cougar and everyonce in a while it won't start but eventually does. Last night it decided it wasn't gonna start at all. It was getting any spark and just as soon as my dad hooked his test light to the battery and touched the coil wires it started right up. Which wire could be messed up causing this?

SOURCE: no spark from coil but has power to it

when you turn the key on you put juce to the coil and the points in the dist. open and shut closing the field causing spark. so i would say you need new points.
to get by you could clean them but usualy they wont last long after you clean them.

SOURCE: flat tire on my 1983 mercury cougar

#1 Look carefully at the CENTER of the hub cap. Gently pry the center cap off. The rest will be self explanatory.
Or
#2 Take one lug nut off . Sometimes there is an extra set of small lugs to hold the hub cap on.
I do apologize for the two choices. Just cannot remember which way the Cougar works.

Check to see if Inertia switch tripped. It would be either in the trunk or behind the floor kick panels. It has a push button reset.

Relays can sometimes have bad contact points and kick out. The TPS sensor can have a bad connector.

Test your fuel pressure at the test port, test the fuel injector harness for signals.

At least you have a chance now to determine if it is a fuel or spark problem.

If the car runs, the pump can be very loud if it is failing.

99 mercury cougar replaced power window motor and switch window still does not work

That doesn't seem possible does it ?

You remove the inner door panel

You think the motor may be bad,so you unplug it,
knowing it is a DC Motor & can be hooked up either
way & will run in either direction
You put 12 volts to it. Doesn't work ,sounds bad,you
install a new one

Now you need power from the switch to run the new motor,
so you work on that
The switch can be disconnected & tested with an OHM Meter
& if worn,you replace that
You checked the fuse before you started & knew that wasn't an issue,
because all the other windows worked

So what did you mis ,short of having no wiring diagram, to make
things a lot easier?

Sun roof on 1999 cougar will not open

Like any other issue

Check for a blown fuse
You won't get many in your lifetime
But if it is blown you know you have
a problem

Then remove & test the switch
Hard to do without a wiring diagram
& ability to read it

Last find & test the motor hiding
up there somewhere
