Take the console out and look under the shifter, if the shifter cables are disconnected from the shifter go to a parts store or ebay and get yourself a Saturn shifter bushing repair kit. happens all the time to S Saturns and maybe the Ls look on youtube for instructions to remove console and put on the bushing kit.

if the shifter cables are still connected you may have to be looking around for a lower mileage used transmission. 96-98 saturn will fit so long as the donor car has the same head, being DOHC or SOHC. so if you have an SL1 you can use a transmission out of another SL1, or an SC1, or an SW1. do not mix a 2 with a 1, bad mojo.

I have a 1996 Saturn sl that won't shift into first without grinding or pumping the clutch. It won't go into first when the cars not running, what's going on ?

Transmission gear boxes have synchronizers to aid in the shifting of your car. It is very typical for the synch for 1st gear to wear out first as it gets used the most. You should have then all replaced.

96 saturn sl automatic

Could be the air hose between the intake - throttle body and the mass airflow meter. Look for cracks and splits in the grooves. May also be a vac hose with a crack that is opening up when the engine shifts.
Look for a source of extra air when the engine is in drive.
Make any difference if you are in drive or reverse ??

96 Saturn SL steering box shot?

Well, it is easy to test the struts. 1st look for oil deposits around the strut tower. 2nd push on the vehicle's bumper or hood, down with your weight. See how many times the vehicle bounces. It shouldn't bounce more than 1 1/2 times anything more than that might need replaced. As for the gear box...I think you got that right...needs replaced.

96 saturn sc transmission problem

Are you sure you are getting the right trans? There are 2 different based on sohc or dohc. The rpo codes are mp6 or mp7. The gear ratios are different and will set these codes.

SL1 manual transmission

if it is just one gear then it is a faulty synchronizer of gear......if it is more than one then it is because your clutch is not fully releasing or the pilot bearing......either way have a mechanic that knows transmissions have a look at it
