Daytime running lights and wipers wont work

1997 jetta, the daytime running lights and wipers wont work because the parking brake light is on. i looked at it this morning and when the car is not running, just the electrical system on everything works okay, but when i start the car the brake light comes on (very dim) and the lights and wipers wont work. could this be a problem with the relay, getting power from somewhere else, or shorted wires, i dont think its a shorted wire because the lights wouldnt come omn at all if that was the case

Had the same problem with my 97 Jetta it turned out to be the ignition switch. No problems since

Its not to difficult, took me 3 hours. You could by a book it should have the assembly drawings for the steering.

If you take it to a shop it books 2 hours labor and about 60$ for the switch.

If staying on too long on that model lights are controlled by gem module and there is no time adjustment need to be diagnosed professionally to see if problem is in the switch or module

How do I shut off my daytime running lights while idleing

Just press the parking brake down just a bit, enough so that the Brake light on the dash lights up. That should turn them off. Don't worry it doesnt engage the parking brake. I have been doing this for years with my Tahoe.

Daytime running lights no longer work after using handbrake.

When the parking brake is applied there is a switch that will cut off the daytime running lights, and they will not work as long as the parking brake is applied. If you have released the parking brake and they no longer work, either the switch that cuts them off is bad or the sensor for the lights is bad.
