The PCM does not supply the voltage to the fuel pump . All the PCM does is energize the fuel pump relay ,closing contacts in side the relay which connects the fuel pump with a B+ voltage supply from Fuel pump fuse 15amp location , under hood fuse box . You have a high resistance problem in the wiring to the fuel pump . bad connection , corrosion etc... Mastering Voltage Drop Testing with Pete Meier and Jerry Truglia
SOURCE: 2001 Aler wouldn't start
1.Disconnect the battery
2.Replace the fuel pump relay
3.Turn key to on position
4.Connect battery
5.Wait one minute
6. Start the car and hope for the best. Good luck
**Ps make sure your gas tank is topped off i did this after reading numerous post
This worked for me, as far as the "crank but wont start problem" that everyone has been having.

WOW! Okay...does not sound like the oil and transmission leakage is related to all the faults. The on-board computer may have farted out on you. Take the negative side of you battery terminal off for 5 minutes resetting everything, reattach and check. Oil can leak out on the ground (Oil pan, valve cover gasket), the oil pan drain bolt, the radiator (head gasket-check radiator for brown and white smoke from exhaust) or valve seal - check spark plugs for gunked oil.

The bigger question here is whether or not the fuel pump is delivering fuel when it runs. Fuel pumps work on pressure. Once the pressure builds up in the fuel lines it will shut off until the pressure drops, then it turns on again. The fact that your pump doesn't turn off suggests that either it's not pumping any fuel out of the tank or it's not building any pressure. First thing to do is make sure there is fuel in the tank. It's possible your fuel guage has stopped working and is giving a false reading.Start looking for gas leaking under the car. A leak that let's the pump run continuously should leave a very visible wet spot. Look at the top of the tank as best you can too. Loosen the fuel line at the throttle body and see if you have pressure there. Maybe it's pouring fuel into the engine and creating a flooding condition. The fact that it runs continuously would suggest the problem isn't the filter. If the filter was plugged it would build pressure. If you can't find anything here I think you are going to have to drop the tank and start looking in there to see why it isn't picking up fuel, possibly replacing the pump. Hope this helps.

Below is a picture of the fuel pump relay and the "plug" plug by numbers. See if you are geting power where the number 87 would be if it was plugged in. If you are not geting power there, check at the starter. There is a fusible link coming from the starter (red wire) if you are getting power on both sides of where the fusible link is, follow that wire further and there is a 15 amp inline fuse. If all is good there, have someone turn the key to the on position while you are checking for power at the number 85 slot. This is the power supply directly from the computer. It will only energize for about 2 seconds. If there is no power there, check the wiring from the vehicles computer to make sure all is good. If all is good you may be looking at a bad computer. You can also check to make sure you have a good ground at the number 86 slot and the black wire at the fuel pump. That ground is located on one of the transmission mounting bolts. All of this information is based on you having the 3.1 liter engine. If you have the 4 cylinder engine, not all of this applies. I just went with the most common engine for your vehicle since you didn't say which engine you have. If you have any questions or need any wiring diagrams or if you do have the 4 cylinder, feel free to email me at [email protected]. Hope this helps and good luck.

I had the same problem. Check the splice in the wiring harness under the relay box. Where it was coroaded on mine was visible. Look it over, may have to cut the tape. There is 3 red and white wires that splice into one wire,( same color). I fixed mine with a peice of wire and 2 wire nuts..Good Luck...Hope this helps.
