Ignition switch won't release the key after turning off the vehicle. I can start it, turn it off and take the key out, but as soon as it's put into gear and THEN turn the vehicle off and try to pull the key out, it won't let go. It isn't such a problem in the winter months, but as soon as the weather is hot (Yuma, Arizona-it's ALWAYS hot) the problem returns.

This is not unusual on a diesel. What happens is there is air in the system. If this vehicle has an electric fuel pump loosen line where fuel enters injection pump then turn ignition key to the on position and watch for fuel to appear and then quickly tighten line before turning off key. Then try to start. If does not have electric fuel pump will need a second person. One will loosen line and watch while other cranks vehicle until you get fuel and tighten line before the other person releases ignition switch unless vehicle starts first. If that doesn't do the job do this where line hooks onto each injector. Probably will not have to do this to all injectors but could run rough until all the air gets out of everything. I have farmed with diesel tractor for 25 years and dad I drove the gm vehicles with the 5.7. You normally don't start a diesel without bleeding the air out of the lines although some will self bleed most won't. Hope this does the trick.
Most newer models have a safety feature called shift interlock. This prevents the key from being turned back to the lock position if you forget to place the gear selector in park. Depending on the model, If it uses a cable, it may be sticking or needs adjusting. If it uses an electrical solenoid. may be blown fuse or park switch. Tap, shake, and pull up on the shifter and make sure it's in park.
You may want to try to slightly push / pull your vehicle to take weight / tension off the transmission, which in turn will allow you to turn the steering wheel enough to see if the ignition switch can be turned.

Insert the key to the ignition switch and turn the key to ON position without starting the car.
leave it ON until the flashing light (security) stops. It will take approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

This sounds like an issue with your ignition switch. Basically what is happening here is that you are shutting off your vehicle, but the ignition switch is not working correctly and is allowing certain accessories to stay on.
Changing the ignition switch breaks the communication between the key, ignition, and TDM (theft deterrent module). With out these three parts communicating, the vehicle goes into antitheft mode and turns off the starter. Read about it thru this link, also offers ways to fix yourself. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/
You have to do a relearn procedure on the anti-theft system:
Attempt to start the vehicle. Leave the ignition on until the THEFT SYSTEM indicator turns off (about 10 minutes). Turn the ignition switch off. Leave the ignition switch off with key in for about 10 minutes. Attempt to start vehicle.
It sounds like your telling us the key won't turn in the ignition anymore for some reason. If that is the case the problem is one or more of the tumblers in the ignition have fallen, if this is the case you will have to replace the ignition itself or at least the ignition core. If you mean the key turn but the vehicle doesn't start I would start by disabling the alarm system you installed to eliminate the starter kill switch as the source of the problem. Also, if this is the case try jumping the vehicle. If it turns over and starts with a jump your problem is the battery having a dead cell in it. It can have all the world but if you have a dead cell it doesn't have the amperage to turn the starter over.
Sounds to me like your starter is gone buddy what's your starter is gone those are the conditions that it takes for your starter not to work so I've given you the remedy I hope you get it fixed soon
