Your transmission may simply need a good flush. Then again a band inside the transmission may need to be ajusted or you may have a silinoid going out. I hope this helps you out.

My 1999 Dodge Dakota 2WD, 3.9 V6, has major hesitation shifting from 2nd to 3rd and also downshifts in and out of OD at about 55 to 60 mph. Above 60, it wants to stay in 3rd only. Took valve body off and...

Is the 1-2 shift high also? When you had the valve body off did you check the screens on the governor solenoid and the 3-4 shift solenoid? These tend to plug up.

Hard shift from 1st to 2nd, then 2nd to 3rd.

Dont think they changed it yet but the older chrysler units had a rod that went from the throttle linkage to the transmission (maybe a cable now)...If you lengthen the rod it will increase shift pressure and give you an earlier shift.

98 Dodge Dakota 5.2 autotrany wont shift out of first in drive???

Does it shift right when you start it cold and then stays in 1st. It sounds like a bad governor.

Transmission problem 98 dodge dakota

just try changing your transmission fluid and filter first, and its not a 5.1 its a 5.2 unless you have the 5.9 r/t then it would be a 5.9. i would change fluid and filter first and go from there... and as far as the extra effort it takes to shift from park, try using the parking brake when you park, set the brake before you put it in park and take your foot off the brake pedal, that stops the truck from resting on the transmission park gear and should solve that particular problem.

Shifting problems

The transmission/computer is designed not to go into overdrive until it reaches a certain temp and I don't remember what the temp is. Mine does same thing and it has 250,000 miles on it. When you start your truck up do you start it and warm up in neutral? The transmission fluid won't flow unless it is. There is know way to force it to shift into overdrive until it warms to the set temp.

Hope this helps
