I just had the same problem on my 2005 VW Jetta 2.0l. These cars are known for the water pump impeller to break into pieces. The impellers are made out of plastic which is a ridiculous move on German engineering. If it is the water pump, rule of thumb is do the timing belt at the same time as the water pump is driven off of the timing belt.
SOUND LIKE ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL LOW.CHECK COOLANT SURGE TANK.IF LOW MORE LIKELY RADIATOR COOLANT LEVEL LOW.ADD COOLANT TO COOLANT SURGE TANK UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL STAY AT FULL COLD MARK DONT OVERFILL OVERFLOW JUG.
