SOURCE: won't even "click" nor " crank" when trying to start .
Agree, it sounds like the starter and it happens often on old Camry. When was the last time you had the starter replaced? The cartalk guys once suggested getting a mallet and bang on the starter and it will work. Eventually you will need a replacement. It is way cheaper to go to junkyard and get a used one (ask them to test before buy).

That code PO455 is indicating that you have a fuel vapor leak somewhere in the system. I'd check from purge canister back taking a close look at all the vapor hose to the tank. If all that check out, purge solenoid & canister would be my next area to check. That's probably what your smelling , so it might be easier than you think to sniff out the source.
SOURCE: How do I change the starter in a 2000 Toyota Camry LE
i'm sure it's not the starter itself that is the problem, have the stater's solenoid checked...it might be stucked. It's quite a lot of work removing the starter but you can do it if you are willing enough to learn. You just need the right idea and tools to do it. Hope this will help save you bucks!
SOURCE: oil leak problem with 1996 toyota camry
I am going to see a mechanic - my trusted mechanic who does not nickel and dime me - to see what this is. I have the same problem and he told me he has never done this job on a Camry and is unsure. Given the miles, he has suggested that maybe it is time to part ways with the car. I am going to ask him if he will put some florescent dye in it and let me drive it for 50-100 mi and then check to see where the leak is and fix it. Let you know what happens. I have to try, the car is solid.
SOURCE: 95 toyota camry died and turns over but wont crank
same thing happened to my sons' Aries. we replaced timing belt and everything worked great> to confirm broken timing belt, remove valve cover >crank engine over and watch valve train, no movement= broken belt. you can check tech manual but as previously stated if this is not an interferance engine, cranking engine won't run a piston into an open valve. good luck.
