Won't start. Dose the motor crank over? If not, sounds like you locked the motor up. You still could of ruined the heads by driving it hot, I can't tell you without seeing the vechile in person.

Check your battery and make sure it has plenty of water in it. When your vehicle was hot the water in the battery could have boiled dry also.

1994 astro van does it have to be drove in overdrive

I would say it could. Especially for in town driving. It would help with the "searching for the right gear" that sometimes occurs at less than highway/open road speeds.

Also for any towing or heavier loads I would recommend NOT using overdrive.

For open road/highway I would use overdrive to get better MPGs.

Hope this helps.

1994 AWD Astro van overheated, then lost ALL power

it seems that the engine blew. the rings, rod bearings, main bearing etc. Sorry but it sounds like that. Especially the smoking at the exhaust. take it back to the one who sold it to you.If possible.

1994 Chevy Astro Van- four wheel drive

Sounds like the auto shut down relay. Located somewhere in the front grille/bumper area. Relay triggers on impact to shut down all power in order to prevent fires etc. Great idea but can cause exactly the frustration you are having if you don't know it's there!!
