MY 2004 Land Rover Freelander was running fine when suddenly it began to hesitate and then stalled while going up hill in a mountainous area in the Pyrennes in Spain. After letting the car sit for abut 45 minutes I attempted to start it and it started and ran fine until I began to go uphill again. I thought perhaps I had bad gas. Any ideas?

Sounds like the fuel filter is dirty and needing to be changed. It's cheap and easy to swap out.

Is it a Discovery I or II?

The fuel filter is located below the electrics box, half way between the battery and the bulkhead on the passenger side, under the bonnet. It is very difficult to see how it all fits, but it has a central screw which holds the plastic filter housing/mounting in place. Find this screw (which is a small self tapper) and be prepared to loose it, or use a magnetic screw driver. Then lift the plastic housing up and away, (towards the engine) be ready with loads of rags to catch the diesel fuel when you disconnect the pipes. There is an earth wire attached to the housing also. (anti interference, I think) It is quite a fiddle getting it back again, as it has two locating lugs on the back of the plastic housing/mounting.

there is a module mounted on the fan shroud that is a common problem. but as always, check fuses, connectors and grounds!
