2006 GMC Envoy XL gas gauge reads empty after filling, then slowly moves up after driving but will continue to lose pressure until it reads empty and the light is on, then the check engine light came on.

I Have a 2006 gmc envoy at first the gas gauge would move to full but slowly began to move back down now its just stuck on E with the engine light on!

  • bnice2meboo Oct 08, 2008

mine does the same...never know how much gas is actually in the vehicle while driving...the meter goes up and down...recently i was driving...thinking i had gas...and had to coast to the nearest stop...not knowing i'd run out of gas

  • Anonymous Oct 31, 2008

I have the same problem fuel guage says it's empty but there is gas. Hit and miss if the engine light comes one.

  • Anonymous Nov 18, 2008

the gauge shows empty at all times

  • Anonymous Nov 26, 2008

i had to change out my gas sending unit 2 times and it works now

  • Anonymous Dec 02, 2008

After filling up, the low fuel light comes on and then the guage eventually goes to full very slowly. Seems to happen only when putting gas in the tank. Stopping, shuting off the engine and removing the gas cap doesn't cause the condition. Only putting gas in the tank.

  • jsandahl Dec 13, 2008

my gas gauge goes to empty only after re filling. I have to use the odomiter between trips. Now my engine light is on and I dont know if it is from that same problem.

  • sanjose_doug Dec 18, 2008

I have a 2005 envoy with the same problem. Started two fill ups ago. Was working fine then one month out of warranty .... Bingo.

I will read other posts and have to research the gas sending unit comment.

  • alldone Dec 24, 2008

Same problem .i fill it up and gauge drops to empty, and then slowly over time it reads ,i hope the right level. I have supported GM all my life ...Its over, I will not buy another GM product again.Constant payments for items that should be recalled is driving us all away from GM.SICK AND TIRED OF IT.

  • Anonymous Dec 29, 2008

2006 GM Envoy check engine light came on and gas gauge keeps reading empty to full then back to empty again.

  • Anonymous Jan 04, 2009

My gas gauge went on e after a fill up and has not reset itself. I am taking it in for service tomorrow with a copy of all the problems with the gas gauge. If I have to pay for this I am contacting GM and will not buy another GM, This is my sixth GM and will stop if not fixed.

  • Anonymous Jan 26, 2009

I have a 2006 Envoy XL SLT and about 2 days ago the gas needle just suddenly began to drop until the low fuel light came on. I knew I had gas but it just kept moving back and forth. Basically, I can't tell how much gas is in the vehicle. So far the check engine light has not come on.

  • Marathon Doc Jan 28, 2009

Same Problem. First the needle would fluctuate. Now it's just stock on "E" and the engine light is on most of the time.

  • Anonymous Jan 30, 2009

Just started having the same problem with my 2006 GMC Envoy - so frustrating

  • Anonymous Feb 02, 2009

I have the same problem with the fuel gauge moving from F to E to F and also service light turned on. car still running without stall.

  • Anonymous Feb 03, 2009

Same problem on 2006 Envoy XL. Fuel gauge swings from F to E and back, check engine light in on. Car has only 49,000 miles. This should be a recall.
Report your problem herehttp://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.... It only takes a few minutes.

  • CraigD5869 Feb 06, 2009

I have a 2005 Trailblazer having same issue gas gauge going back and forth when i fill up it goes to empty until i drive about 25 miles then it gors up to almost full and check engine light comes on and off.

  • Anonymous Feb 26, 2009

I have the same problem, super annoying. Mine use to fluctuate while driving, now it is always on E. My husband is on his way to the dealership right now, they better fix it under our warranty.

  • rcwwoody Mar 04, 2009

i have the same problem my gage reads empty all the time 2005 envoy, sometimes the light goes off

  • ShanePitt101 Mar 05, 2009

Exact same problem. Gas light stays on all the time and check engine light as well. Ran out of gas yesterday because of it actually, well that was my fault but I need a solution please!

  • jshonis Mar 08, 2009

2006 GMC Envoy with exact same problem-

ran out of gas 4x basing mileage @ 18 mpg-

now use 16mpg & always have extra-

as far as gage, annoying, but, I have a feeling that tank will need to be dropped, so, forget it...

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2009

I have a 2007 and this just happened today anyone have a fix yet?

  • Anonymous Apr 10, 2009

I feel your pain......same thing for me on my Envoy 05. I was told the fuel filter is the problem and that the tank would need to be dropped of course because the filter is in the tank....and it would be about $400 to fix.........why couldn't it be an easy inexpensive fix? I am biding my time and hope it doesn't completely go on E all the time.

  • rockit5 Apr 27, 2009

2009 Envoy XL with same gas guage issues and engine light coming on sporatically. Any helpful hints???

  • Anonymous May 05, 2009

2006 GMC Envoy gas gauge reads empty. Fluctuates up and down, but if tank was recently filled, will remain on E for a while. Of course, not covered under warranty anymore and now will not pass inspection. Ridiculous.

  • Anonymous May 20, 2009

After filling the tank in my 06 Envoy the gauge reads empty for a while, then goes up and down, after a few days after getting the gas it will beging to work, I was told I needed a new fuel system...$600.

  • Anonymous May 22, 2009

just put gas and now it is showing empty.

  • Anonymous May 23, 2009

I have the same problem. I fill the car up and it registers empty. After several miles of driving it returns to full then back to empty for several additional mile. This is disturbing.

My GMC Envoy Denali started doing the same thing. I will fill it and it will still read empty. Then it will go to full then back down. I never know how much I actually have. The replacement part is over $700.00. The labor will be about the same because they need to remove the gas tank.

The sulfur content in the fuel is contaminating the contacts of the sending unit.

Some people have had good luck with some fuel system cleaners solving this problem. The cheap stuff doesn't seem to do the job.

Not that GM isn't completely exonerated from fault but the gas stations don't do a very good job of watching what the stations sell.

  • Anonymous Jan 15, 2011

That's an interesting issue. I had just used STP gas treatment in the tank right before the gauge stopped working correctly. Wonder if that could cause the gauge to fail.

Same problem here with 2006 Envoy. NHTSA has opened an investigation early this year. Be sure to file a complaint with them:

http://www.safercar.gov/
or 1-888-327-4236

Investigation # DP10001: THE PETITIONER ALLEGES THAT THE FUEL TANK LEVEL SENSOR IS DEFECTIVE AND COULD RESULT IN A SUBJECT VEHICLE RUNNING OUT OF FUEL, STALL, AND BEING REAR ENDED BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. ODI WILL EVALUATE THE PETITION FOR A GRANT OR DENY DECISION.

I filled up my Envoy (it was at 1/4), when I started the vehicle the yellow low gas light came on and the bell. I shut off the vehicle and restarted it and it was fine - that was 3-4 fill ups ago. It has continued to get worse. It now fluctuates up and down, but if tank was recently filled, will remain on E for a while.

I have also contacted GMC about this problem.

Like the others, i had the same problem with my fuel gauge. I had a garage replace the fuel tank sending unit, that fixed the pproblem. Shortly afterward, GM sent me a recall for the fix, letter also stated that if I had the repair already done, they would refund me the money. I took a copy of all my bills related to this fix and the dealer gave me a check for the full amount. so try your gm dealer first on this matter. replacing the sending unit is not an easy or a very safe job. The sender is in the gas tank.

"Sending unit. Its all one unit including fuel pump, float, ect. The check engine light is because of the high or low resistance in the unit. Let me know if you have already fixed.. You have to drop the tank to get to it also."

the fuel pump, filter and fuel sensor are inside the tank, on the top. to change it, you have to disconnect the tank and lower it to the ground (you should empty the tank before dropping, as such).

SOURCE: gas gauge problems

Common problem on the 03-06 Envoy instrument clusters for the fuel gauge to go out. It's usually caused by one of two main problems, either the stepper motor on the cluster's circuit board is going out or the sending unit on the fuel pump is going out. 2006 GMC Envoy XL gas gauge reads empty

Gas gauge readings are controlled by the sending unit on the fuel pump. I do not believe there is a separate fuse for any particular gauge. In order to fix it, you have to remove the fuel pump from the gas tank, determine if the float is stuck or the sending contacts are out of alignment or dirty. Some can be repaired, but most are not serviceable. Remedy: replace the fuel pump and sending unit assembly. I would first inspect the wiring from the fuel pump connector(s) to make sure you have good connection and wire integrity.

Gas tank reads empty after filling and driving for a second. Gauge slowly starts to climb back after driving for 5 plus minutes then drops again.

the flue sense in your tank is bad most likely but it could also be just a bad connection between it and your flue gauge witch can be caused by corrosion or a lose wire

2006 GMC Envoy XL gas gauge reads empty after filling continues reads empty and the light is on then the check engine light came on what can be the problem how ca i fixe it to save mesome $$$

It is most likely your fuel level sending unit has gone bad. It sits inside your fuel tank to tell the fuel guage how much gas you have in the tank.

The sending unit for the gas gauge is in the fuel tank and part of the fuel pump module, it is not sold seperately. Price is around $350.00, 2 hours labor to install the part.

2006 envoy gas cap won't tighten and the fuel gauge reads empty on fill up and fluctuates back and forth.

You can just replace the gas cap...However about the fuel guage fluctuates back and forth...thats due to the sending unit, which is located on the fuel pump itself

2006 envoy gas gage

your gas gauge sensor is most likley the problem on alot of new cars they measure your fuel off an average of were your float is at. like if your not moving it stays in one spot but as you move the float moves and reads the lowest amout that it is averaging and if your float keeps reading low your going to read that you have alot less gas than you really do. have you tried filling the tank all the way and see what it does? if it stays at full until you use some gas and your float starts moving your gas gauge will probley go down in that case its the fuel sensor if this dont help let me know and ill c what i can find out for you
