Tip & How-To about 2013 Dodge Avenger

ETC error light on dash and car runs poorly

Try replacing spark plugs first, especially if around 100K miles on car. Mine runs excellent again. Very easy fix but get good quality plugs.

I have a 98 4runner with 300000 miles. It's been running excellent but day before yesterday it started sputtering like a tractor when driving and idoling. Service engine light blinks when in overdrive, and goes off when it shifts back down. It's reading misfire on #6 but coil pac didn't fix it and neither did injectors. Any suggestions?

First check the plugs. Pull the #6 plug and look at the electrode. If it's wet and/or dark (black) it's probably not firing correctly. What is the spark plug gap? Is the center electrode eroded (not flat on the end)? Swap in another plug and see if it makes any difference. How old are the plugs?

Second, check the wires. Did you replace the wire(s) when you changed the coil pack? They should be replaced periodically (I replace the wires on my '96 4Runner at about 100k miles). Check the wires with an ohmeter. Resistance should be around 16-17.5k ohms (depends on length).

FYI, each coil pack on your vehicle fires two spark plugs. The #6 spark plug is fired by the #3 cylinder coil pack, so if the coil pack were bad, most likely both the #3 and the #6 plugs would not fire.

How often do you need to change the spark plugs?

Newer vehicles, including yours are made with 100K plugs. This means unless you have issues with them they dont require replacing before you exceed 100K miles on the vehicle. If you are having issues with the performance of the engine such as sputtering that leads you to believe its the plugs then after a thorough diagnosis, if you decide to replace them be sure and utilize quality plugs and gap them properly. If you get "specialty" plugs like T3 or tri-tips, etc make sure you get them for your vehicle as they come factory gapped and ready for installation. ALso be sure and replace all plugs at same time.. dont mix and match. Inspect your wires for cracking or glazing as well.
