88 Toyota Camry won't start

I have a 1988 Toyota Camry that I bought about two weeks ago that decided to not start this morning. When I bought it the first thing I did was have it checked out by a mechanic, had the oil changed, the transmission flushed, tune up. A week later I even had a smog check done and it passed with flying colors. It's been doing fine and then this morning nothing. All of the lights, radio, headlights, a/c - heat ie:EVERYTHING came on. WHne I went to turn the key nothing happened. There was no clicking sound, no grinding, nothing. It was not hot, it was dead cold. However it had been raining last night and I am wondering if this could have something to do with it?

Had the same problem with an '88 Camry. Replaced the battery, distributor, and starter, but it didn't fix the problem. Then, a few years later, when the battery was getting old and tired, I replaced it with a more expensive _heavy-duty_ battery. That helped quite a bit. It didn't totally fix the problem, but made it a lot less frequent.

A mechanic I trust told me that non-OEM replacement rebuilt starters pretty much all have substandard wiring, with bad spots in the windings. A heavy-duty battery maybe cranks out enough extra amps to mostly compensate for this.

What kind of Freon does a 1989 Toyota use. And if you are doing it yourself do you have to buy a certain adaptor?

buy a retro fit valve for 9 bucks on ebay, then 35 bucks for new freon at walmart and go on your way. If it does not work, you need to replace the ac system anyway and probably won't, like I did not, and just drive with no ac.

  1. Also on 1992-96 models with cruise control, remove the actuator cover and disconnect the wiring harness. Remove the three bolts and then lift out the cruise control actuator. Remove the bracket from beneath the actuator and put aside.
  1. Peel the rubber boot away and remove the nut and disconnect the negative battery cable from the magnetic switch terminal on the starter. Disconnect the electrical connector also located on the magnetic switch.
  1. Support the starter by hand and remove the two mounting bolts.
  1. Remove the starter from the transaxle.
To install:
  1. Place the starter motor in the transaxle and support by hand.
  2. Install the two mounting bolts and tighten them to 29-31 ft. lbs. (39-42 Nm).
  3. Connect the connector to the magnetic switch. Place the battery cable on the switch terminal and install the nut. Tighten the nut and position the rubber boot over the cable.
  4. Using the ignition switch, "bump'' the starter over a few times and check for proper operation.

Hope helps.

There is only 1 "set" of timing marks. If there is more than 1 then someone has modified your engine components. Here is a picture of where they should be.
