P0442 OBD-II Trouble Code - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)

What does that mean?
This indicates a fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. It means a very small leak has been detected. In fact, the leak can be from a hole as small as 0.04" in diameter. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.


Symptoms
You likely won't notice any drivability problems.


Causes
A code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
* A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
* A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
* A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
* Other small leak in EVAP system
* Faulty vent o-ring seal


Possible Solutions
With a P0442, the most common repair is to:
* Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
* Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
* Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses

1,3,4,2, is firing order (is clue 1) and using (no engine told gee) a quad or dual pack wasted spark coils, they fire 2 at once. 1 and 4 fire then 3 in 2 files, at same time. this tech is seen back to 1974 , save money for not having 2 more coils as seen all every new car now. called 4 COP coils; the ecu cuts fuel if spark fails on all EFI made. (ASE class day2) the causes are simple. in order of common. 1: the HV wire is bad, for sure carbon or the silicon jello junk wire core sets, pure OEM trash, I only use NGK MAG wires, or BOSCH MAG. IF, 1 of the 2 spark plugs 1&4 are fouled so bad that act open, fails. or 21 year old the spark gap is larger than hat rim, bad. tech1 to tech 2, gee bob ,I can throw my hat thought that gap. or coil pack bad. well try new plugs first the HV set wires. or some dweeb swapped coil packs not doing 1 wire at a time and mixed UP 1 from 3 wire, OOPS !. the 2 paired spark plugs are wired in series if one shorts the other works. if one opens both go dead. Plugs or wires or driven coil) just like old skool Christmas lites did for decades.

buy the service manual. no really buy it if doing deep DIY work. no 2 cars are the same unless are. and same country or same engine. same drive line, same smog devices. Check for spark by grounding a plug on the engine somewhere and turn it over for a couple seconds. If spark, the, problem is fuel delivery or compression..

I just had the same on my 2005 Lexus ES330 (upmarket Camry) It started with the Fuel / Air Sensor on Bank 1 which was replaced with an OEM Denso part. It is often referred to as an o2 sensor, but it isn't, the o2 sensor is the one AFTER the catalytic converter. The Air / Fuel sensor regulates how much fuel is added to the combustion chamber as decided by the ECM (engine computer) using data from the sensors. That fixed that (eventually), but I have been running it with a faulty sensor for a couple of months. When it says 'System too Lean', it combats that by dumping more fuel into the system and that causes sooty deposits on spark plugs and in the Catalytic Converter. I got 50 yards down the road and got System Too Rich. This was because the sensor were now picking up the soot being burned off. I cleared that code and it didn't come back. About a month later I got the P0420 code which I researched heavily and saw it is not a critical error. I bought this, add it to half a tank of gas, the code came back once whilst using the Cat Cleaner, but I turned it off and it hasn't come back.

Yes it can be replaced, the oil pan has to be removed and the valve body. In a lot of cases the solenoid is not the problem, it can be caused by contaminated fluid clogging the solenoid orifice so be sure the fluid is clean and try to just change the fluid or have it flushed, check with the Toyota dealer with your VIN information there may be a recall for the computer or it may need to be reprogrammed, if it is available there is no charge for the recall.

The sending unit is on the fuel pump and could be stuck in the full position. There is no separate fuse for the gas gauge. I think you will need to check the wiring from the fuel pump where you can for breaks, cracks in the insulation and also, check the ground. If that looks ok, pull the fuel pump.

It appears to be a known limitation…

For 2002 to 06 the sender at the top of the gas pedal is very slightly adjustable. Loosen the nut and see if there is enough slot there to bring your idle up a hair. Or clean your throttle body is another possibility.

I found this post area while looking for a way to fix my stuck 2001 Camry LE drivers seat. Sure enough, while engaging the seat motor (it could be heard making an initial clikc), I hit the front rails a coupel time prettysolidly with a rubber mallet. That fixed it!

If its got a factory amp and its bad you will get those symptoms.

Could be a damaged sending unit jarred in the event, or a damaged ground wire to the sender in the tank

Usually it is the drive unit for the CD. The linear tracking device that drives and guides the CD read laser is not tracking. Usually when this happens there is NO fixing it. You might just have to bite the bullet and get a new head unit.
