Safety problems with 1984 Datsun Maxima

try forums.maxima.org You can find lots of info on any year maxima there. For nissan/datsun enthusiasts, the maxima is a sweet car. The only thing better is the Z (the older ones!). You will find tons of enthusiasts online and in your are with car clubs, and you will be hard pressed to find anyone who will give any datsun a bad rap. Good choice! It does depend on how the owner treated it, but with 4 datsuns I owned, I never had any problems with any of them, and some of them were pretty rough! You'll get your money's worth. Good luck!

if it is a manual gearbox there should be a plug on the side of the gearbox,it could be either side, it is oil level as well as the filler plug, you will have to access it from under the vehicle, just screw it out & add oil until it runs out of the hole, then replace the plug.......hope this helps.....cheers.

I have a 1977 datsun

Hi, have you removed the distributor and oil pump? See procedure pasted below.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the coolant. Remove the radiator hoses, the automatic transmission cooler lines (if equipped), the radiator and the shroud.

CAUTION When draining coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze, and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.
  1. If equipped with power steering, unbolt the pump and move it aside. DO NOT disconnect any of the hoses. Remove the pump mounting bracket from the engine. Remove the idler adjusting bracket from the engine.
  2. If equipped with an air pump, remove the pump and bracket.
  1. If equipped with air conditioning, remove the idler pulley bracket and the belt. Unbolt the two lower compressor mounting bolts and support the compressor, then remove the two upper bolts and the mounting bracket.

Support the compressor in such a way that stress will not be placed on the hoses. DO NOT disconnect any of the compressor hoses or lines.
  1. Remove the distributor.
  2. Remove the oil pump attaching bolts, the pump and its drive spindle. Refer to the Engine Lubrication portion of this section for details.
  3. Remove the engine cooling fan and the pulley, together with the drive belt, then remove the water pump.
  4. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and the pulley, lock-up the engine to do this. The best way is to remove the flywheel inspection cover between the engine and transmission, then lock the flywheel with a tool made for the purpose. These are available in auto parts stores.
  5. Remove the front cover-to-cylinder block bolts, the four bolts retaining the oil pan to the front cover and the two bolts screwed down through the front of the cylinder head into the top of the front cover.
  6. Carefully pry the front cover off the engine.
  7. Cut the exposed front section of the oil pan gasket away from the oil pan. Do the same to the gasket at the top of the front cover. Remove the two side gaskets and clean all the mating surfaces thoroughly.
  8. Cut the portions needed from a new oil pan gasket and top front cover gasket.
  9. Apply sealant to all of the gaskets and position them on the engine in their proper places.
  10. To replace the oil seal, perform the following:
    1. Using a pointed piece of plastic or wood, pry the old seal from the cover. DO NOT use a screwdriver or other metal tools, which will damage the sealing lip.
    2. Oil the lip of the new seal; DO NOT use grease. Press the seal into place, making sure the flat side faces forward and the lip faces the front of the engine. Use a seal driver made for the purpose (if possible) or a socket of the proper diameter.
    3. Oil the crankshaft and the newly installed seal, then install the front cover.

  11. Carefully mount the front cover to the engine. Install the mounting bolts and tighten the bolts to 7-12 ft. lbs. (9-16 Nm) for 8mm bolts or to 3-6 ft. lbs. (4-8 Nm) for 6mm bolts and the oil pan bolts to 4-7 ft. lbs. (5-9 Nm).
  12. Before installing the oil pump, place the gasket over the shaft and make sure that the mark on the drive spindle faces (aligns with) the oil pump hole. Install the oil pump so that the projection on the top of the shaft is located in the exact position as when it was removed or is in the 11 o'clock position with the piston in the No. 1 cylinder placed at TDC on the compression stroke (if the engine was disturbed). This will ensure proper distributor timing. Tighten the oil pump bolts to 8-10 ft. lbs. (10-13 Nm).

For further information on the oil pump, refer to the Oil Pump removal and installation procedures in this section.
  1. To complete the installation, reverse the removal procedures.

My speedometer clicks and bounces,

if this is a datsun and not a nissan name plate then you need to check and see if the speedometer cable is sticking or binding.if it is you can remove the inner speedometer cable from under the dash you have to remove the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer head and move were you can work on it under the dash, turn the inner cable by hand to see if you can feel it bind or turn roughly before removing it,pull the inner cable out from the outer cable wipe it down and as you re-install it lube the cable with a light grease all the way to within the last 2-3" and re-install to the speedometer head and drive to see if it fixes the problem.usually this fixes the problem however if it doesn`t then the speedometer head is the problem

Engine knocks when startup but

Its probably lifter noise, check what grade of oil is in the car or change it to a slightly thicker grade,i would expect that the car has a lot of mileage on it,if the oil light goes out quickly on the dash when starting its not the oil pump(very uncommon),knock sensor is for ignition timing to stop pinging, nothing to do with your noise, generally its engine wear

Oil pressure gauge not registering

The gauge needs to be replace. It screws into the engine and is not too difficult to replace. Call some auto parts stores to get a replacement. The electrical connector on the top comes off, then unscrew the unit. Replace with new unit and re-connect the connector.
