1985 Lincoln Town Car - Page 2 Questions & Answers
I have a 85 lincoln town car that didnt pass
Has the check engine light come on at any time? Your oxygen sensor/s may be bad causing it to run too rich or too lean. You may also want to replace your air filter and run a good amount od fuel system cleaner through the gas tank before having it tested again. Please rat my answer, thanks.
My car didnt pass emissions
What were the emission readings, e.g.
what gas was to high?
That is how you start to figure out your problem
HC,CO,CO2,NOX ?
When i drive my lincoln
You could disconnect the vacuum hoses to the EGR Valve,
plug the removed hoses, and road test
If it clears up,replace the valve.
It could also be an ignition misfire
Clean the rotor and cap, in the distributor
How do I replace the headlights in my 1985 Lincoln
To replace the headlights, you must first remove the trim ring around the headlight. There should be three or four screws holding it in place. Once the trim ring is removed, there will be four screws, two at the top and two on the bottom. Carefully remove screws and remove the retaining ring. Gently pull bulb out, unplug the wire connector. With new bulb in hand, carefully connect the wiring to back of bulb and carefully set in place. While holding the bulb in place, set retaining ring back in place over bulb and insert screws. Then replace the trim ring, tighten the screws and you are done.

Engine Won't Stay Running
I have never seen one outside the distributor. Yeah that changes things that you can keep it running applying gas. So
Have you checked the air filter? A plugged filter will do this as well as a partialy plugged fuel filter. Take the air filter out and knock it against some thing to get the extra crud off it, You should be able to point it at the sun or a light sorce and light should be trying to filter through. If if is dark then replce it, You can try to start it with the filter out for a few minutes but some engines are controlled by the vucuum and it may not work well unless the filter is in it. Just try it and see if it helps. Remember I am trying to give you standard things to trouble shoot that is basic for all vehicles so know that I am unfamiliar with your engine type. Just trying to get lucky here.
Does yours have fuel injection or caburetor type? Either/Or, there should be a screw there someplace that you can adjust the idle to higher rpms to get you by until you can locate the problem. You can also take the fuel pump off and blow through it with a paper towel in your hand to catch the junk and crud. Remeber to note which way it came off. It needs to go back the same way. Some you can only put on one way. If it looks like a lot came out the consider replacing it but try it again first to see how it runs now. Of course in little or nothing came out just replace it.
I also might consider a ful tune up. Spark plugs, and rotor and cap.
Let me know if any of these things did the trick but to be honest, I don't know where else to help you after this with out being there and seeing for myself. I would rather you left no thumbs at all if i was no help or a thumbs up for trying. I still need to keep my score up. Thanks and keep me informed, Raz
Why wont my heater turn on ?
You need a new control or if you have an average mechanic you can have him set it to only blow heat and when summer comes you can switch back to air condition..I saw this done quite a bit,, Control is quite expensive,,$700 to $900
Make the chang it works fine

Gentlemen:In the harness there is two black wires
I think you have 2 problems:
1-Injector module
2-Ignition module
The Injectors don't pulse in both cases because the injector module has a problem. The spark is generated if the ignition module is working by creating a pulse on and of at the primary of the coil. You can generate spark manually by have positive and negative connected at the primary coil, and turn on and off to generate the spark at the spark plug connecting directly to the secondary of the coil. If you have the spark then your ignition module has a problem since it is supposed to do what you did manually to generate the spark. Hope this can help.
The car won't start and the electrical checks out
If the motor turns over and the car won't fire then it's an ignition or fuel problem. You can first check to see if the motor is getting fuel by taking off the fuel hose and see if fuel is present or pumps out when you crank the engine. If you got fuel then I would check the cap/rotor or other ignition parts.
Oil change
since your car is older and mileage is high i recommend using 10w40 high mileage oil and and takes 5 quarts.hope this is what you wanted.
Will not charge alt test says alternator is good
Have the Battery tested, on all ford alternators the voltage regulator and rectifier are built in.
There are only 2 components in this system so its going to be the battery or the cables.
Check the negative cable as I have seen problems with the fox bodied fords.
On rare occasions there will be a problem with the field wire going to the alternator, but I have only seen 1 in 20 years
