2001 2 series saturn.....both turn

if both do not work I'd check the flasher unit first or look for a blown fuse (by the passenger side left knee, behind the cover on the console.) The flasher unit is behind the bolster cover above the driver's knees.

My steering wheel is locked

Somebody is going to have to take the steering column down and see what the issue is. The steering column is mechanically connected to the lock cylinder as an anti-theft provision.

I need to replace a

you press the old one out and the new one in, takes a special tool. or you can use a chisel/punch with a BFH and beat the old one out, then draw the new one through with a nut, a thick washer, and a long breaker bar. i would do it the way which stresses metal the least. Call a local shop and ask them how much to just replace the stud while you wait. won't take long

Hi i have a 1997

three things can trigger codes, an actual malfunction of the sensor, a loose timing belt (cam sensor) wiring problems like a defective sensor connector or wiring to the connector and a defective engine control computer, so just throwing part at the problem is very unwise, have GM dealer diagnose the codes and then based on the results you decide what you want to try and replace and what u think is above your skill level and better left to a professional technician.

There should be a small black wire going from the battery to the starter motor. It sounds as though it has come loose.
Check it and re connect it.

The locks on my 2001

Had this problem on a 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais. Took it to an auto electric shop, and they pinpointed that the electric door lock module was bad, with bad contacts that were shorted out due to moisture.

After disassembling it and sanding the contacts and reassembling, I had no more problems with the random power door locks locking on me.

I since have sold the car and haven't heard about any more problems with that problem.

On a newer car than my 1990 Oldsmobile it can be the body control module, too.

Saturn S-series Starting Rough or Not Idling Well?

1991- 2000 Saturn S-series owners sometimes complain about rough starts or rough idling. In some cases it's a cause for the car not to start even though the starter is fine and the battery is at it's best. There is a simple reason for this that most owners don't know about.

So What's The Deal?

It's simply actually. It's called the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECTS for short). The what?! It's a basic thermoresistor (a resistor that changes it's resistance based on temperature) that is in a place where coolant flows past it. It tells the car's PCM (computer) how hot or cold the coolant is. Of course when you let your car sit overnight and come out in the morning to start it the coolant temperature is close to ambient temperature. When the car is started the coolant starts getting hotter and the ECTS tells the PCM the temperature as it's rising until eventually at full operating temperature.

Then What's The Problem?

Saturn used a plastic tipped sensor which is prone to cracking because of the constant heating and cooling cycles it sees. Coolant sees anywhere from -10 degrees Fahrenheit to 230 degrees Fahrenheit as does this sensor. So you can imagine plastic wasn't the best idea. It gets worse though. When this sensor cracks it allows coolant to flow to it's two wire connector and thus ruining the connector with old gunky coolant.

So This Has to Be Expensive and A Long Procedure To Fix...

Not at all! It's actually a very cheap sensor and in an easy place to replace. The nice part is that this was remedied in 2001 when Saturn switched to a brass sensor that does not have this problem. The part can be found at a local AutoZone or Advanced Auto or simply from you Saturn dealer (if one is still around). Ask for a Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor and when they come back check that it is brass (which is pretty obvious because the plastic tipped one has a very smooth rounded leading edge while the brass is more flat on the top).

The sensor is located just under and behind the upper radiator hose entrance into the head (might have to remove the intake tubing). It has a two wire sensor going to it. Check to make sure you're not changing the one that goes to the dash gauge on early S-series (91-95).

Remember to do this when the car is off and cold.

This should fix your rough starts and rough idling. If it doesn't, check the connector to make sure it isn't gunked up and put it all back together.

Ignition Key won't turn?

Hi There,

I'm assuming you have a key.

If you do and you are unable to turn it, this is what is happening:

Your front wheels are slightly (or more) off center. They are trying to center themselves and in doing so are putting pressure on the lock plate which allows the key to turn.

The fix:
Which ever way the front wheels are pointing, however slightly, turn the steering wheel further in the same direction and try the key while holding the wheel over.

Doing this takes the pressure off the lock plate and allows the cylinder to move.

If you don't have the key that's a whole different fix......

Best regards
Mike

How to replace rear pads on 2002 saturn

You will need to unbolt the caliper, usally 2 bolts, take the caliper off the rotor, remove the pads. You will need a larger c-clamp or a caliper piston tool to compress the piston, if there are two indentations in the face of the cylinder piston, you will need a brake tool to turn the piston, clockwise a few times press in the piston and repeat until the piston is completely back into the caliper. Install the new pads and put the caliper back on. Make sure you pump up your brake peddle a few times after the job, before you take off.
