Heater core
Remove dash and heater box this will let you get to lid to heater core.
Ok here it goes, my car runs fine at first, then
have the fuel pump pressure checked, if you think you have a vapor lock,, and your going to think I'm totally bonkers, But an Old man told me this years ago so I tried it, clip 6 or 7 clothes pins on the rubber section of fuel line, I have no clue how this works or why, But it does
One day it was starting great and running good.
The basics we need to test for are;
1.spark at the plugs(it should jump a test plug with a 1/2 inch gap).
2.fuel at the carb, hold open the choke butterfly and twist throttle linkage, should be a good spray in both venturis if 2 or 4 barrel carb or just one in single barrel carb.
3.compression at all cylinders within 10% of each other and the factory spec, although a lower reading should still start.
Check to see if the carbon stem is still inside the center of the distributor cap, without this the spark will not get from coil to plugs.
Over the years I have seen these fail to start when the carb coke butterfly sticks closed, check this when you run test 2.it should be slightly sprung as you open it.I think this year was either a manual choke on a cable or had a heat coil on a rod to open it.
Hope this helps,or get back with findings and we can go further to solve it.
Flat tire on my 1983 mercury cougar
#1 Look carefully at the CENTER of the hub cap. Gently pry the center cap off. The rest will be self explanatory.
Or
#2 Take one lug nut off . Sometimes there is an extra set of small lugs to hold the hub cap on.
I do apologize for the two choices. Just cannot remember which way the Cougar works.
How do you replace the blend door actuator in a 1997 Mercury Cougar?
- Locate the blend door actuator. The actuator is located behind the dashboard, usually on the passenger side. It is a small, rectangular motor with a wiring harness and a linkage arm.
- Disconnect the battery. Before beginning any work on the electrical system, disconnect the battery to avoid any electrical shorts or other accidents.
- Remove the dashboard panel. In order to access the blend door actuator, the dashboard panel may need to be removed. Consult the vehicle's repair manual for specific instructions on how to remove the panel.
- Remove the old blend door actuator. Disconnect the wiring harness and the linkage arm from the old blend door actuator. Remove any mounting screws or bolts that secure the actuator to the dashboard.
- Install the new blend door actuator. Install the new blend door actuator in the same location as the old actuator. Secure the actuator with any mounting screws or bolts. Connect the wiring harness and the linkage arm to the new actuator.
