My guess is bad brakes or anti-rattle plate malfunction. time for a brake job or worse.

The airflow control ( defrost/floor/vent ) is controlled by electric motors attached to the heater box assembly. There will be no cables/screws causing this issue. Some of these motors require the entire dash assembly to be removed for access depending on their location.
