1987 jeep Cherokee temp gauge moves when car starts then goes. Back to 0. I replaced temp sending unit what now
ever consider it's telling the truth, (an IR pyro gun (tool) answers that in 1sec flat.
if it is truthing ,then that means the thermostat is missing,
or stuck open or it has one of those abominations, a failsafe Stat.
or air pockets below the stat causing it to go nuts, and the coolant sender too, goes double nuts, because of stat and because the coolant sender don't work in AIR. see? FULL IS KING> is it.
of when dead cold is the Rad FULL>????? cap off?
if not, BINGO>?
then does the rad hose get fully hot with a hot engine.
hand touches top rad tube and hand flies off, bam, 180F+
that be hot. is it?
(look ma, no tools?)
if the coolant is at 180f , rad full
and the gauge reads wrong, it might be a bad gauge or wires to it.
but that 180f thing is #1 , is it?

Black smoke coming out of exhaust, only on
Your engine is running "too rich" meaning more gas is going into the chamber than is supposed to. If it is a late model, to need to see your mechanic. FYI , blue smoke is oil, black too much gas, white, antifreeze, (really bad).
