1988 WRANGLER-just replaced 4x4 actuator and now
the play is normal the u joints have some play. not much, but some. Do you have open diffs? or Locked? place the Jeep on jack stands and see if the all rotate if you have lockers. If you dont you will have two spin until on looses traction then it will change too the other. Hell take it out and play have your buddies watch the times. Keep your wheels down.

1988 wrangler goes foward but not in reverse. It
it sounds like you have 2 bad gears, 2nd gear may be fine for an hour or for ten years, theres no telling on that. your reverse gear is probably shelled out. your best bet is to rebould your transmission or buy a new one, sorry

'88 Wrangler w/4.2 & Auto Trans. Cat Convert
The jeep has air injection and this is part of the air pump. The cat should have two ports.. These tubes should have check valves to prevent backfire.Usually their routed up on both sides of motor and attached at the air cleaner abouts

Need details for final steps of rear main seal
This may not be the "official" way to do this but I've always put white lube on the crank journal where the seal rides. I also put a dab of black rtv sealant on the ends of the seal (small amount only) If you don't put lube on the seal it can overheat and burn before lube from the engine gets to it. Silicone dab will join the two deal halves to prevent any seepage there. Don't permit silicone to dry before assembly.
Been doing it this way for years and never had a leak.
I never replace the seal without removing the crankshaft either...Most replacements done that way are at best a 50/50 bet at working.

Need adjustments for 88 model carter 2 barrel
To set carb adjustment, first set timing correctly, then put both a vacuum gauge and tach on the engine. adjust one idle screw to highest vacuum reading and highest tach reading, then do the other one. go back to the first and re-adjust again, then the other. I find that if you have a mechanical screw or a solenoid that holds idle speed on the linkage, turn them back so that engine is idling at the lowest possible rpm without stalling before making adjustments, then when finished, bring idle rpm up to recommended rpm using those. On an older carb, usually the idle screw covers have already been removed. If not, you need to remove them before you begin, usually best done with carb on a bench.

Will not spark until ignition is turned off then
You didn't mention engine size so this isn't a fix (most of my diagrams are terrible anyhow) but, when you are turning the key on and off you are doing the same thing that the distributor pickup does (causing the coil field to collapse and make a spark) On that basis, I'd check the coil pickup and anything along that line ...also make sure that the run side of the ignition switch is hot with the key on.

Will not keep batery charged,i replaced
There were a few different alternators used on those...I suggest you check the wiring to the unit and make sure you have power where it belongs. There may be a main fuse in the power distribution center near the battery...check that also.
Some have an external regulator. depending on the system, it is either a separate unit or is part of the computer. Be careful when testing that you don't arc to ground or it can cause more problems. make sure there is definite connection from the battery to the large wire on the alternator. Can't get more specific but something here should help.

Front drive line will engauge but front tires will
I would suggest from your description that there are several possibilities.
1. Broken input PINION SHAFT.
2. Broken AXLE DRIVE SHAFT.
To check,
Get underneath and see how much that front Driveline rotates in each direction, More than 1/4 Turn is excessive backlash....Problem!!!
If it rotates freely...possible Broken PInion Shaft.
Raise the front wheels off the ground.Secure the Front drive line, get a friend to hang onto it, and wedge a foot against 1 front wheel, now try and rotate it. If it does, then that is the Junk one. Likewise, if it does not, then repeat on the other side. If that is OK, then it has to be the Transfer Box
Then you have a bigger problem.

Stuck in 4 Wheel Drive Gear
Assume that is stuck in 4wd, cannot shift back to 2wd. Have you tried shifting to 4wd/Lo and back? Try letting out on the clutch while slowly rolling?
Assume you are manual transmission?
