Removal & Installation

The heater core is removable from under the right side of the instrument panel.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Position a drain pan under the radiator, open the drain **** and drain the cooling system to a level below the heater core.

Plug the heater core tubes to avoid spilling coolant in the passenger compartment during removal.

  1. Disconnect the heater-to-engine coolant hoses from the core tubes on the firewall, in the engine compartment.

If necessary, loosen and remove the under dash cabin light retaining bolt

c17hydro_118.gif

With the bolt removed, the light and housing may be repositioned out of the way

On some early model vehicles, the cabin light mounted under the dash may interfere with cover removal. If necessary, loosen the retaining bolt and reposition the light housing with the wiring attached.

  1. From the passenger compartment (under the dash) remove the heater core rear case cover-to-cowl screws, then remove the cover from the vehicle.

Be sure that all are removed before attempting to remove the cover. If necessary, unbolt and reposition all/part of the dashboard for better access.

  1. Remove the straps or brackets from each end of the heater core.
  2. Carefully remove the heater core from the cowl and case.

To install:

  1. Insert the heater core into the case, taking care not to damage the tubes as they are inserted through the cowl.
  2. Install the straps or brackets to the ends of the heater core and secure using the retaining screws.
  3. Install the heater core rear case cover and secure using the retaining screws.
  4. If moved for access, reposition and secure the dash mounted cabin light and housing.
  5. Connect the heater-to-engine coolant hoses to the core tubes.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable, then properly refill the engine cooling system.
  7. Run the engine at normal operating temperatures and check for leaks.

There is a bunch of pictures to post so please keep refreshing your page. This is gonna take a few minutes...

Not gitting fuel from the gas tank to the fuel

this is a mechanical fuel pump that works off cam lobe, check fuel line from pump all the way to tank, notice wet or rusted line, split rubber lines that connect metal lines to pump and top of tank. disconnect fuel line at pump (suction) side. put a rubber hose on the suction side and clamp, install other end in a clear container with gasoline in it. attemp to start vehicle if it pumps fuel and starts then your problem is the line from the tank to the pump, if it doesn't pump it is the diaphram in the pump. If you suspect the pump and remove it inspect what drives it as well at this time. I believe it is pump or the supply line

I have been told my starter is broke but i dont

Ok, this is simple to find. Walk out to the truck, crawl under by the tranny, on the right side. Most Chevy's are there. Between the engine and tranny, is a fly wheel(giant gear with lots of teeth. The starter should be there. Very easy to replace. Undo the battery cables from the battery( don't want to short anything out), then undo the wires on the starter. Now, you will have 2 or 3 bolts holding the starter to the block of the engine. Remove those, and take starter out(CAUTION: make sure there are NO shims there(small thin metal between starter and block. If there are, SAVE them) Now replace the starter(PUT those shims back when replacing starter), bolt back to block, and re hook the wiring. now reconnect the battery, and start your engine. Take about 30 to 45 minutes of your life. Not hard at all

I have a 1984 S10

You can fit a Small Block V8 into an S-10 with a little bit of work. There is also kits for sale for this purpose as well as books on how to do it. Just do a google search for "S-10 V8 kit".

If you do decide to follow through with the idea you will have a lot of fun ;) I put a 425hp Small Block in my 85 S-10.

Engine turns over, but does not rotate.

Does not rotate although it turns? Is the starter the only thing working? If so the starter drive is not engaging to the flywheel to turn the motor over

Fuel pump replacement

there are two metal straps that bolt on tords the driveline up on a cross member they are 15mm put a floor jack under it and put a small amount of pressure on the tank to hold it so it dont fall on you then once you got the bolts out let the jack down a lil unplug every thing let it down the rest of the way then there will be a lock ring on the sending unit you go to use a screw driver and hammer to turn it then the unit comes out and you can get to your pump

Anyone have a diy for installing and removing

Ok, these are pretty easy. Start with the front; they'll be the most important. Remove the tires, and place on blocks or jack stands. Make sure you have a piece of wire or a short, strong bungee cord to hold the caliper up once you're going. Turn the wheels to one side, all the way. Start with the side opposite of where you turned to. If you study the backing plate, you'll see that there are fairly large bolts that hold the caliper bracket to the backing plate. Remove these (they'll be TIGHT). This should allow the entire caliper and bracket assembly to be removed. Wire or bungee this up so it's not placing stress on the hose. Next is the rotor. It SHOULD come right off, but sometimes they rust on. If so, hit it with a hammer, and it will come loose. Now, you'll want to compress the brake piston. Be careful with this, because often when you compress the piston, it forces the brake fluid up and out of the reservoir, leaving a mess and eating all the paint from your engine compartment. This is easily done with a c-clamp. Remove the brake pads, and put the new ones in. They just clip in. Now you want to put the rotor in place, and put the caliper and bracket in place. Tighten everything down tight again, and put that wheel back on. Start up your truck and press the brake pedal until it isn't soft anymore. Turn the wheels the opposite direction, and do the other side. As for the rear wheels, do the same; remove the tires and place it on stands or blocks. There should be a rubber plug on the bottom rear of the backing plate. Remove this. If it's missing already, disregard. Look inside. You'll see a wheel with teeth in it. This is what you use to loosen the brakes and adjust them. Start turning this by inserting a screwdriver and prying up or down on it. You'll figure out if you're going the right direction if either you can pull the drum off, or if the drum won't turn. If it won't turn, go the other direction until the drum will pull off. Again, sometimes it takes some persuasion, as these like to rust to the axle (in the center). When you get the drum off, you'll see the internals. Take a picture of it so you can make sure you don't forget how it went together, or use the other side for reference. Remove the springs, and you should be able to pull the shoes out of their places. Put the new ones in the same way the old ones came out. Put the drum back on, and tighten that wheel until the drum won't turn, then back it off just until you don't feel the pads dragging on the drum as you turn it. Put the rubber plug back in if applicable, then put the tire back on. Do the other side the same way. ::note:: the adjusting wheel on the other side is usually opposite of its predecessor. Have fun!

My truck is overheating very badly and it smells

Most likely with the radiator smoking, the radiator itself has a small crack or hole. Again it could be a bad hose spraying the coolant out. Usually if the water pump goes out it has a weep hole that will start leaking.Check the radiator over good and the hoses.
