My fiance just changed the motor in his 89 chevy caprice to a 305. he put a new alternator in it and its not holding any charge. The care keeps shutting off when you drive or if we charge the battery

Have you checked alternator output to see if it is getting from the alternator to the battery ? Could be a blown fuseable link or other wiring issue.

The brake booster from most of the GM cars of the same size should fit. To change it you need to unbolt the master cylander from the booster be careful not to kink brake lines disconnect vacum hose from booster unbolt booster from fire wall. Now replace in reverse order. Always be careful of the brake lines.

I have a 1989 f150

It's either a t-20 torx screw or a 7/32" bolt head screw. Google image search "ford ignition module tool" you will see the two most common ones. The one that has the two different tools offset is my personal favorite. Either one will work and either will likely be available at any good auto parts store. Very high idle on

There are a few things to check there. First, make sure the choke is working. Next, adjust the small screw below the choke assembly on the end of the primary throttle shaft (right side). Also make sure that the choke pull off vacuum mechanism is working to partially open the top choke plate after the engine starts. Also make sure that all vacuum lines are connected and not cracked or broken.

I brought a brand new battery and dorve the car

Have your alternator checked and at the same time have the battery checked at your local Auto Zone or O'Reilly auto parts store. Or auto parts store similar to one of those. Sometimes when your battery goes dead it tends to wreak havoc on the alternator which can cause the battery to not hold its charge.

What would cause a car to run smooth while idleing

Had a similar problem with my '85 Caprice Classic with the 305cc. Turned out to be a bad throttle body gasket on the carborator. It was "sucking" in too much air. Replaced it and haven't had any trouble now for months.

I took my 700r4 transmission out of my 88 chevy

I would stick with the 700r4 and have it gone thru and maybe have a shift kit installed. You may have to change out some things putting in a 400.

No spark

Check the leads on the pickup coil under the plate in the distributor. If one breaks the distributor needs to come out, lower gear needs to come off and shaft removed to get to it (not really that hard).
If the leads are good then the module mounted on the plate needs to be changed. (there is no valid test for that part except to replace)
