I have a 1998 chevy astro and for clerification

As I said a few minutes ago ... your alternator is driven by a belt. Open the hood ... find the belt ... you will find the alternator ... and the power steering pump and the A/C compressor and the water pump and the air pump ... But you MUST open the hood first.

Bad compressor how to bypass

Most auto parts stores sell a bypass pulley kit that allows you to swap out the compressor, while still using your existing belt. shop around because auto parts stores vary on price. good luck!

I have a '98 Astro van that starts fine when cold

I agree, replace the Coolant temp sensor, it will have 2 wires going to it, Not 1. Usually located just behind the breather near the thermostat outlet.

This sensor controlles your timing and fuel to air ratio.

I'm wanting to know the longevity of a Chevy 5.7L

If you are only at 184,000 miles, it all depends on how much and how you drive this van. If you keep up on your routine maintance, drive it respectively, you should get well over 300,000 miles total from this engine.
Each person drives differently, so if you are the only driver and it's only driven to and from work + minor local driving (shopping etc.) this engine should last you as long as you own the vehicle. For a 98, 184,000 isn't bad - have seen less because owners are that particular about how often and how far they drive the vehicle, some of which have a secondary that they use for their more frequent traveling. It all depends on what you use this vehicle for.
I hope this information is helpful.
