if your old one had them you should reuse the old ones , when you go to start car lission for a grinding noise or starter gear getting hung up , if its grinding take out shims one at a time till it sounds good ,if its hanging up add shims till you hear it releasing cleanly ,if you need shims most part stores sell them in packs of 4

there is no drain plug. you must undo all the bolts holding the pan in place. After the first few bolts the fluid will start leaking out so have a drainpan under it

Check the water control valve . It most likely isn't letting coolant into the core.

Hi Carl, This sounds like bearing issues in the transmission. Your description sounds like counter shaft. 4th gear is straight through, so likely some less noisy. SO, you could go through the trans, but this gets cost prohibitive real fast. Only takes one gear and then another then too much cost. If you are not capable in rebuilding the trans, consider a used transmission. Much less cost, but some risk if the trans is not good... Doc

Leave the pulley on & loosen the pump

You need a new wheel caliper

check the solenoid switches in the black box under the hood

Did you check the fuel filter? Do this first, you have to remove it to check it. Next, turn your key to the on position and have someone listen by the gas tank to see if they can hear the fuel pump turning on and off. If not, check the fuses for it and if they are ok, then its the pump.

It could be a plugged catalytic converter, dirty air filter, or a badly carboned-up map sensor. In which case, if its the cat--just punch a hole thru it and it will either run better, or not right away. The other two, just take them out and try cleaning them and see if this helps.

it is most likely along the frame on the drivers side and one one the pump in the tank

TRY THE FUEL FILTER FIRST IF THE FUEL PUMP WAS GOING BAD IT WOULD STALL AS YOU PUSH ON THE GAS PEDDLE AND PUMPING THE PEDDLE WOULD NOT HELP FUEL INJECTION AND PUMPING THE GAS WILL HAVE NO EFFECT ON THE RUNNING OF THE VEHICAL

check the valve timing after replacing the chain. check that you connected the ignition module to the coil. Check ignition timing as you may be out 180 degrees on the timing.

sometimes the sending unit in the tank can cause this type of problem usually because its shorting out thats why your display starts going nuts and your engine starts dying and yes pumping pedal does help keep it running sometimes but does not fix short in sending unit

A relative of mine has a '97 GMC 1500. 2 years ago I spent several weeks chasing gremlins on it. Replaced everything - plugs, wires, ICM, TPS, and some other items. How many miles on your truck? It should fire within 1 to 3 turns of starter engagement. I have to ask, how do you know there is no spark or fuel when the engine does not start? Have you checked fuel pressure? Our trouble ended up being the fuel pump. We pulled the bed off the truck and found that the lines and wires at the top of the tank were severely rusting and eroding. I would have never guessed this kind of degradation due to the fact that the truck is so well taken care of. Check your fuel pump and tank thoroughly. Also check the tank filler neck and vent. If it runs for 15 minutes then quits, sounds like the fuel pump might be cutting out. Will not hurt to check and may save you time under the hood. I have poured over those electrical diagrams for the GMC. Alot of things tied into keeping those engines going nowadays. Let me know how things work out. GC.

i would replace it, not easily done you need special tools
