Internal transmission gears are shaft mounted and have to be incredibly bad to ever be loose.
You can get a haynes transmission manual for a diagram but you may need to order it since most "do- it yourself" stores don't have them. Quite likely you'd do better finding another unit in a scrap yard though. (new parts are expensive)

It sounds like your car need the idle time adjusted. When any engine timing adjustments are needed I would strongly recommend servicing by a licensed mechanic. Adjusting these settings merely the fraction of a hair in the wrong direction can have undesired results or inoperability.
Tuned up a 1993 chevy cavalier has spark won't start
Spray aerosol carb cleaner into the throttle body while an assistant tries to start the engine. If it runs for a few seconds then quits, you are not getting fuel into the engine. Check the fuses. You might have blown the fuse for the fuel injectors (possible if you removed any of the injector harnesses) or the fuel pump relay.

If you are getting spark TO THE SPARK PLUGS (you need to check this) it is a fuel problem-it could be as easy as a fuel filter, or it may be the fuel pump-it is a 18 year old car, so I'd do the fuel filter first just because it is easy and cheap to do.

Do you have a simple miss on 2 cylinders? If so, you might be looking at a fuel injection problem, specificially a computer problem not firing the fuel injectors for the two cylinders in question.
I would investigate that route.
Could also be a module for the coil packs, that the coil packs sit on.

Here is a picture to help you with the firing order I hope this helps you. As for consuming too much gas it is possible you need to replace the fuel filter. A clogged or dirty filter will give you poor mileage (I know sounds backwards) also your air filter will do the same it will help your engine breathe.

Yes, this is fuel-injected engine. Look for vacuum leaks and then consider replacing the ignition coil (located on back side of the motor). Just follow the spark plug wires and you'll find it.
Mechanic refused to do oil
did he tell you that your engine needs rebuilding ? journal bearings are gone to start and the rest needs to be established and all that is done in rebuilding or replacing engine depending on your choice.
this guy was honest if he told you all that and saved you $$$
