1994 Nissan Pickup - Page 3 Questions & Answers
What does a distributor cap for 1994 nissan pick up looks like?
The distributor cap is a round cylinder with a number of big fat spark plug wires attached to its top - each spark plug wire goes to a different spot on the engine in a regular pattern. The cap itself is about the same diameter as a one-pound coffee can.
I have no idea what in the world a "rollery button" IS.
What does a rollery button looks like
take off the dis cap and in there will be a rotary button that spins around giving sparkt to the plugs through the wires..thats where the spark comes from...
Engine knocking i reved up the motor a loud pop sound came from under the hood now the motor will only turn a little bit even by hand before locking up tight. any ideas?
From your descripion you may have spun a rod bearing. I haven't really seen any timing chains break persay. You usually hear a rattling sound coming from the front of the motor but you can still rev it up.
It sounds to me like you might want to clean out a pan large enough to drain the engine oil in. Drain the oil and look for small metalic flakes. If you see any, it's time to call some salvage yards and shop for a low milage motor(less than 100,000 miles) If you are lucky, you might stumble upon one with 50,000 miles or so. It's probably the motor though. If the chain broke, the upper end of the engine is going to be scrap metal anyway because the valves would have hit the pistons and bent..It would still be cheaper to replace the motor with a used one. Good luck
I have 1994 nissan pickup.
Will it eventually start after it cools down for an hour or so? Make sure your battery connections are clean and not corroded. This is a common problem when people don't maintain their cars. Battery acid builds up arround the terminals an can limit the amount of current to pass through the battery cables when hot or sometimes cold.Use bakeing soda and water and pour it on the corroded areas. Get a small wire brush and try to clean the terminals. Ideally you want to ddisconnect the terminals from the battery (NEGATIVE CABLE FIRST!) You can buy a battery terminal cleaner real cheap at an auto parts house which will do a good job cleaning the battery terminals and the inside if the cable connection. Nissan typically connects their positive cable to the battery positive battery cable end. They usually use a 12mm or a 10 mm on their connections for their terminals. You can buy after market positive battery terminal ends with the nut to secure the battery cable. ( would suggest replacing it if threre is a lot of corrosion) You can have a heat soak problem with the starter where when the starter gets hot from the engine heat it will not work. Your description "Will not crank after driving 40 miles or so, , when you use the term "crank, suggests to me that when you turn the key, the starter will not spin the motor" There is also a starter relay.which could be bad. This is only available from your Nissan dealer. If you mean When you turn the key, the starter spins the motor but the engine does not start, I need more details on the vehicle, Is it a 4 or V-6?
How long does it have to sit before it will start, assuming there is nothing wrong with the starter? Are there any yellow lights coming on which would would indicate a problem? You can get the truck scanned at Auto Zone for Free. Their scan is just basic and does not go anywhere into the depth that a scanner like the $14,500 scanner I have does. BUT I CHARGE FOR SCANNING. A way you could best have your truck diagnosed for probably a low cost, would be to go to a shop who works on these vehicles every day. Tell them what is going on (this is after you have eliminated the obvious). You can in many cases arrange with the shop on an appointment where you can arrive at the time you have driven about 50-60 miles and have it arranged to where , when you show up, they immediately take your truck in and look at it during the time it is malfincting. Odds are they can spot the problem quickly and your diagnostic charge would be low because there is time to find out if it is electrical, fuel or what ever. If the problem does not show up as you have described and the condition can not be reproduced even after you have driven it, the shop will still have to charge you a minimum for taking it in even if it didn't act up.Think about it I can give you tons of possibilities, but can't do it without input..
Whats making it run rough and shut off?
If it's a California or Canada emissions model it may be the EGR vlave stuck closed, otherwise the problem may lay with the coolant temperature sensor or a broken ground to MAF sensor.
Mass airflow sensor
Remove air cleaner assembly, it will be on the passenger side of the throttle body. Its secured by two phillips screws and a 3-wire harness. I'd suggest cleaning it with MAF cleaner before removing/ replacing as they are not cheap. $300 at parts store/ dealer or $75 on ebay.
Dosent start makes a clicking sound
Manual Transmission, or Auto? If Manual, when it doesn't start, does it click once when you turn the key, but nothing else happens? If so, replace the Clutch Relay - under the hood on the passenger side fender. I've done this a few times on my Nissan. Cheap part ($30), but incredibly irritating when it starts acting up. If you hear repeated clicking, it's either the starter or solenoid, so a starter replacement would be in order.
