Removing the fuel tank
Probably the static sheild for the wires. Check the wiring diagrams and if there is a dotted box, then that is the static shield, just to protect the sending unit from getting electromagnetic interferance.

Have you had the engine control computer tested for fault codes? If not do so. I think you may find a code for the CKP sensor in memory, it is commion for the CKP (crankshaft position) sensor to fail on these 90's models. The symptoms you have fit the sensor to a "T"

if this has a plastic intake these have a problem with the intakes warping allowing coolant into the combustion chamber.the only fix is to replace the intake manifold and gaskets.make sure the intake bolts are tight and torque to specs as if the bolts are loose/broken or not to torque then the intake can cause coolant to leak into the cylinder because the gasket is not sealing.
My security light on
The security light is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM. These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. There is where the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle.

Hi Dave.
You
can perform a reset of main control module (ECM) disconnecting the battery terminals for a couple of minutes. That will reset the check engine
light until the problem occurs again. Make sure that you have the stereo anti theft code if
needed.
The
proper way to reset the DTC codes is using an OBDII scanner. The job can be done at the dealer place or at any authorized garage for a small fee (half hour labor). In US the scan and reset can be done for free at Autozone. If possible go to the
nearest Autozone, ask to do a code scanning take note of codes and ask to reset the ECM.
Finally, you can reset the codes at home using a scanner tool like this:OBDII Scanner - U480.

check the wiring harness from the IAC motor. You will likely find a broken wire, and it will not set a code.
