All functions of the BCM. You have a computer network error and / or a bad set of connectors. A good auto electrician can diagnose using a professional grade scan tool computer. You can't guess problems like this.

there is no factory connector you must tap into the existing wiring for brake, turn signals, tail and running lights, they make special adapters to "piggy back" into these wiries, U-Haul trailer rental can do (install and sell) this kit for u very cheap.
all FUSES good .
big failure on your part is not scanning you own car
and posted all real seen DTC errors here.
and all ABS errors not told and there are some.
well most used tranny are no good
25 years old. gee super hard to get lucky there.
190f is not hot at all the engine is 180 to 200f hot normal thermostat spec.
or 225F up hills or pulling a heavy trailer. fans kick on,.
forget 25 year old cruise and gee if brakes lamps or VSS is dead all cruise failS and more.
AND THIS CAR ABS FAILS DEAD SO DOES CRUISE.
and tranny and cluster see why.
cruise drops out to if the PRNDL switch lies. as most do that old. (FOOLING YOU MECH)
the starter on any car made fails if PRNDL fails
aka; park neutrals witch or TRS switch, range switch
all do by law, so you can not drive over the kids in gear.
again it is NOT hot trans for sure, not hot. ok?
the bell housing metal and that poorly named transmission cooler in the main radiator is heater and a cooler. both, so the box warms upfast ON PURPOSE to engine temp , NORMAL .
and NOT WASTE FUEL. HOT ATF IS MORE SLIPPERY SEE?
so forget all that hot stuff. DOG CHASE TAIL.
no I am not tellING you ever that hot parts can not fail.
never hear me say that and i know why.
you do have ABS failures, it seem the question is
does ABS fail the transmission, 99% sure not in 1998.
I will now read your SM
AND THE ANSWER IS YES FOR SURE;
the speedo meter is dead (cluster) that means
TCM (tranny brain) can not ever shift by MPH speed ever. and cruise is dead if speed is dead.
VSS is dead,
only matters now is where is VSS1 speed sensor MPH located.
now the truth reading your service manual to you.
well on most 1998 cars and older it was be on the rear of the 4wd transfer case box NOT yours.
see how things change over time .?
but back 25 years to your car hear we go
RTM reading the manual)
the cluster has a computer and all data to the MPH meter come from CCD network comms.
using a real scan tool may show lost comms to cluster.
IDK I can not scan your car.
does the tach meter RPM work if YESthe Comms network is good.
next point of failure is.
ok page 1 of TCM (PCM) transmission controls show
it works just like me 2008 wrangler
THE ABS MUST BE WORKING OR THERE WILL BE NO WORKING TRANSMISSION ON THIS CAR.
VSS IS IS CREATED BY THE ABS BRAIN
BUY AVERAGING 4 ABS WHEEL SPEED SENSORS.
keep in mind it may just average rear only ABS sensors. in turns one wheel goes slower. so...
math is does to cure this error.(ABS math)
on some cars the VSS is on the rear axle, pinion input shaft or off axle ring gear.
THE MAGIC IS ,NOT EVER NEEDING A 4WD BOX VSS SENSOR ON THE BOX. SAVING $15 PER CAR.
THAT IS THE WHY./
KILLING DEAD CLUSTER MPH AND CRUISE TOO.
CAN I ASSUME THIS VERSION OF TRUCK IS 4WHEEL ANTILOCK BRAKES AND NOT 2WHEEL (rabs) REAR ANTILOCK BRAKE VERSION OF CAR TOLD IN THE SERVICE MANUAL ,SM
????????????????
ALL BRAKE SWITCHES, BOTH PEDAL AND THE BRAKE PRESSURE SWITCH INPUT TO ABS CONTROLLER MUST BE GOOD
AND ALL WHEEL SENSORS GOOD.
ONLY DODGE,ABS SCAN TOOLS WORK
. HERE. ABS IS NOT PART OF OBD2 SPEC.
THIS IS AT END NOW
SCAN YOUR CARS ABS
USING A REAL ABS SCAN TOOL
AND REPAIR ABS FIRST
NOT 190F NO 4 TRANSMISSION
NOT VSS SENSORS THAT DO NOT EXIST OUTSIDE ABS.
HARD PROOF PHOTO SCHEMATIC.
now more, one version is the 3 wheel ABS
1 on rear
seen here.
https://youtu.be/G5_A-g2Rt-w?t=37
on rear axle PINION, 3rd member ring pig.
others are 4 wheel.
I can not guess only look can I.
The headlight relay for a 1998 Dodge Dakota is located in the Power Distribution Center (PDC) under the hood. The PDC is a black box located on the driver's side of the engine compartment. The relay for the headlights is labeled on the underside of the PDC cover. You can refer to your owner's manual for a diagram of the PDC and the location of the headlight relay.
For 5 miles it is running on choke. Try cleaning the Throttle Body and MAF.
If that doesn't work, you need an auto electrician with a pro grade scan tool computer. It can record exactly what goes wrong at 5 miles and diagnose the fault.
It appears to be a known fault

Do you hear the fuel pump when you cycle the key?
If not, then Check the ASD - auto shut down relay ,under hood, drivers side, distribution box
Only got computer,crank sensor,and coil
The distributor hall effect sensor, is for the injector timing,do not move the dist.,
Is the ignition switch and neutral switch okey
If you got no wiring diagrams or experience with a volt meter, your in a tough spot.
This is a pretty broad question. Sometimes throwing parts at a problem works, sometimes not.
Engines need 4 things to run: fuel, air, compression, and ignition. Fuel: Need to test that line pressure is within spec, injectors are working (resistance is usually 12-14 ohms) Air: Check for proper vacuum, air filter, air path Compression: usually does not need checked, but if there is oil in the coolant, coolant in the oil, or oil in the intake or exhaust I would check this Ignition: simple spark test
YOU NEED TAKE VECHICLE TO DEALERSHIP OR GARAGE THAT DOES AC REPAIR.THEY NEED TO DISCHARGE AC SYSTEM BEFORE YOU CAN REMOVE AC CONDENSOR.YOU NEED SPECIAL AC SPRING LOCK TOOL TO RELEASE THE COUPLER ON THE REFRIGERANT LINE TO CONDENSOR. THE COOLING FAN AND CONDENSOR REMOVE AS ASSEMBLY.
Your Manual should tell you if not then depending on what transmission you have. this should get you close then you can top off after getting it up to operating temperature.
