Shift lever cable
It certainly sounds like something has become disconnected between your gear shifter and the transmission. If your shifter is in the floor, just take the cover/housing off and check it out. It will probably be fairly difficult to see anything from underneath the vehicle. Hope this helps. God bless!
1998 olds silhouette hard to start in cold weather
I suspect your car doesn't have a choke if it is EFI.I'd suspect a faulty coolant temp sensor unit, which is not telling the ECU that the engine is cold. Some EFI cars have an extra injector called a cold start injector. If fitted this could be faulty. In both the above cases there may be an ECU trouble code you can read out. In the US Autozone will do this for you.In the old days the classic cause of hard starting was always faulty engine timing. If your car has a timing belt and it is worn, it may have jumped a tooth or 2., but this is uncommon.
My 98 silhouette gets smoke from thermostat area in town not on longer trips?
Hi J, Let's be sure of a couple of things first-off.
1) are you seeing smoke (from burning oil) or steam (from a possible coolant leak) near the thermo, which contains coolant?
and
2) are you sure the condition isn't happening all the time, and when on "long trips," which I assume you mean, while driving faster on the freeway, and when in slower traffic, you can see it because there's not as much air flowing in the engine area due to lower vehicle speed? Do you see any coolant residue around the thermo, which could indicate a leak?
