2002 Ford Explorer odometer DTC Test Codes.

Odometer trouble codes can sometimes be an absolute pain in the tailbone to decode. An option here is to get the vehicle plugged into an OBD2 scanner to check the main ECU for Trouble Codes. These are easier to decode as they are generally used in most vehicles after 1996. Post these codes and we'll try to help you more. If you have to pay for this service ask at 4 or 5 different places as prices can be VERY different!

Have a 2002 exployer 4.0 no crank and no start just died at red light want do anything have a new starter new battery

Ignition switch maybe . Or if it's a automatic transmission it could be the park neutral safety switch. Try putting gear selector into neutral an see if it starts then . Your vehicles is pretty old , have the main battery cables ever been replaced ? Do you know how to test automotive electrical circuits using a DVOM - digital volt ohmmeter ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMXENKujYtc&t=103s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhRPLgH6uZg&t=3s

2002 Ford Explorer XLT does

No ,not tunex . Qualified repair shop . Code's stored in 4X4 control module. Need a factory or some other professional scan tool to read code's . SECTION 308-07A: Transfer Case - General Information 2000 Explorer/Mountaineer Workshop Manual DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Procedure revision date: 06/17/1999 Transfer Case -Automatic Four Wheel Drive (A4WD) The A4WD system is an electronic shift 4x4 system that allows the operator to choose between three different 4x4 modes. The operator can switch between A4WD and 4WD HIGH modes at any speed. To engage or disengage LOW range, the vehicle speed must be less than 5 km/h, the brake depressed, and the transmission must be in NEUTRAL. The front/rear driveshaft speed sensors (Hall effect) are mounted to the transfer case and detect the speed of the front and rear driveshafts. This input is used by the generic electronic module (GEM) primarily to control A4WD operation. The throttle position output signal is provided to the GEM from the powertrain control module (PCM). This signal is used by the GEM in controlling the A4WD clutch. The shift motor sense plate, an integral part of the electric shift motor, informs the GEM to the position of the transfer case. The digital TR sensors are located on the LH side of the transmission; these sensors inform the GEM when the transmission is in the neutral position. The electric shift motor is mounted externally at the rear of the transfer case. It drives a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and range fork within the transfer case between the HIGH range (A4WD, 4HIGH) and LOW range positions. The 4x4 shift motor uses a module containing two relays which, under the control of the GEM, shifts the transfer case shift motor between HIGH range (A4WD, 4HIGH), and 4LOW modes. The solid state clutch relay is used to activate the A4WD clutch within the transfer case. System Function Hall effect sensor monitors input and output shaft speed. In the A4WD (C-Trac) system, the GEM varies the torque sent to the front driveline by controlling the transfer case clutch. At rest and under cruising conditions, the GEM activates the transfer case clutch a minimum duty cycle (percentage of time the clutch is turned on), which allows for the slight difference between the front and rear driveshafts which normally occurs when negotiating a corner on dry pavement. Under any of the following conditions, the GEM will increase the duty cycle in order to prevent or control slip:
  • Slip is detected (by using the Hall Effect Sensors)
  • Heavy acceleration (throttle position).
Feature inputs:
  • Brake ON/OFF switch.
  • 4WD mode switch.
  • Digital transmission range sensor.
  • Clutch switch (manual transmission vehicles only).
  • Vehicle speed signal (transmitted from the ABS module).
  • Front/rear driveshaft speed sensors.
  • Throttle position information from the PCM.
  • Contact plate position inputs A, B, C, D.
Feature outputs:
  • Solid state clutch relay (pulse width modulated signal: grounded when relay is on, battery potential when relay is off).
  • A4WD indicator (ground when activated, open circuit when deactivated).
  • 4x4 shift motor relay outputs.
Shifts between A4WD and 4x4 HIGH can be made at any speed. Listed below are the inputs and outputs needed by the GEM to execute a change between any of these modes. Feature inputs:
  • Front/rear driveshaft speed sensor.
  • Vehicle speed signal.
  • Throttle position information.
  • 4WD mode switch.
Feature outputs:
  • Solid state clutch relay (pulse width modulated signal; grounded when relay is on, battery potential when relay is off).
  • 4x4 HIGH cluster indicator (ground when activated, open circuit when deactivated).
When shifting into or out of LOW range, the GEM requires that the vehicle speed is less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake is applied, and the transmission is in NEUTRAL. Feature inputs:
  • Throttle position information.
  • 4WD mode switch.
  • Contact plate position inputs A, B, C, D.
  • Vehicle speed signal (transmitted from ABS module).
  • Brake ON/OFF switch input (battery voltage when brake is depressed, open circuit when not activated).
  • Digital transmission range sensor (ground when transmission is in NEUTRAL, open circuit otherwise).
  • Start/clutch depressed input (manual transmission only).
Feature outputs:
  • 4x4 shift motor relay outputs.
  • 4LOW cluster indicators (ground when activated, open circuit when deactivated).
  • Solid state clutch relay (pulse width modulated signal; grounded when relay is on, battery potential when relay is off).

Where is the remote key transmitter located on a 2002 Ford Explorer XL

First go to ford owners manual.com and register for free then download your owners manual go to roadside emergencies and your fuse box diagrams are in there and the fuse values also your key and remote control procedures are in there check all fuses next it depends where your keypad is to your location of the driver door module if it' on the door by the lock cylinder and the handle it is located underneath the defroster grill on the passenger side above the glove box if the keypad is on the upper part of the door where the window track is that if the window was open you could grab the door it' in the right rear passenger panel where the seat belt is pop out both panels for the trim and you will see the box with the 5 digit code on it but I think you have a fuse problem here so 1 by 1 take them out and use 0000 that' 4/0 steel wool to clean and shine them and alcohol after this and all are good check your remote control batteries they maybe dead and if still no luck check the keypad wires for corrosion or broken off these should be done first /////// fuses////remote batteries //////door keypad wire check (if you always used your key to punch in your code there might be a hole in a button allowing water to get in and short it out it depends on the button type soft rubber is the bad one but also the gasket could be dried up letting in water but it' most likely a corrosion or broken wire here )////// then go to the module and I gave you both locations because some were done in the dash grill and later assemblies were done in the back as production was starting to change for newer module trucks it depends on the build date anyway take your time go slow and write everything down that you did so we can rule out possible causes of the problem most times corrosion and oxidation of wires and contacts are to blame here as well as bad fuses and dead remote batteries you probably have 2 things going on here ok good luck and have fun learning and post back if the problem persists we'll get you there I'm a taxi mechanic in nyc.with 50 years experience in all phases of the automobile and we've had a lot of explorers over the years so you have the right person on your team now to get it done once again good luck and I have to get back to a crown victoria that one of my BEN HURS has managed to ruin a 4 month old transmission that I rebuilt they are amazing people I swear that they are driving up and down stairs with the cars/trucks at orchard beach or entering equestrian events and jumping hurdles the vehicles go out and never come back the same way after one 12 hour shift totally abused by maniacs so always look in your mirror you ll never know whats coming at you okay later stephen
