turn steering wheel hard back and forth while trying to turn key sounds like the steering lock tab causing problem

It would appear that the relay is misfunctioning. Try swapping one from nearby and when your car won't start but your seats operate then you'll know what to do. THanks, Dana

I have not done this model, but the hardest part on these cars is usually getting the trunk lining off the shock towers so you can access the bolts at the tops of the shocks. On a '98 three series, you have to remove the rear speakers to get the trunk lining out intact. To remove the rear speakers, you have to snap up the speaker covers in the rear deck, and snapping up those covers without breaking them when they are 13 years old and brittle is just about impossible.
I don't know if your rear speakers will have to come out to get to the shock towers. For your sake, I hope not. It would be tempting (and much quicker) to cut the trunk lining off the shock towers and glue it back when you are done. If you do it neatly, only another BMW owner would notice what you had done.

Make sure you have one. Its on the left in the trunk. Load 1-6 cd's in it and then, with the radio on, select CD on the dash

Given what you have said & the metal shavings I would pull it & rebuild it Not worth diagnosing the PO741 TCC issue as long as there is metal, it is thru out the entire unit. Nothing special about that trans because it is in a euro car They use Gm Trans & the US Mfg uses Euro, across some vehicle lines & models

have the shift solenoid tested

Just plug in a code reader and select clear codes.

maybe the engine of your car is wrong ,you can check it ,or check if the car key programmer have something wrong .

It could be incorrect fluid level or the fluid & filter may require changing

Probably the battery in the remote. Would check that first. Let me know if that works before getting deeper into it.

What is the problem? Keyless entry doesn't work? I would check the batteries in the remote first. Let me know if its something else. Good luck
