Water leaking under water pump
Your issue may lie at the end of this long answer pasted from another answer.....
The 05-06 equinox 3.4 L have very specific requirements for cooing system maintenance. Since yours is in an unknown state from past maintenance, best to just follow the service manual by , first flush the cooling system with the thermostat out, the heater on full and the thermostat housing replaced. You should replace the thermostat after the flush is done since the car is nearing 10 years old. After the flush, replace coolant with a 50 / 50 mix of dexcool and water. Remember to bleed air out of the water pump tower bleed port while refilling the surge tank. Once full, replace the surge cap and run the car to normal operating temperature, then let cool to start the thermal cycle that will draw coolant back to the engine from the surge tank. Refill the surge tank to the seam inside the tank again and repeat the thermal cycle process until the level remains constant. Finally after the engine cools one last time, place 2 GM or Bars GM style leak stop pellets in the surge tank and run the engine up to operating temperature one last time. This last step is a requirement for this particular engine, if not done, the heads will weep water near the #1 cylinder internally and externally. The number one cylinder will load with water and the plug won't fire for the first 10 seconds or so after the engine has cooled. Additionally, combustion gas from one or more cylinders will get into the coolant resulting in gurgling sounds as the water returns to the surge tank. I have no idea why this engine requires this, but the service manual is adamant that the pellets be replaced every time the cooling system is serviced. I've found that using only 2 to start and adding one at a time if needed works best to prevent over loading with sealant and clogging the heater. Hopefully this is helpful, getting that copy of the 2005 service manual on CD has been a lifesaver for me.
