2009 corolla hooked up jumper cable backwards, car won't start
TAKE OF BOTH CABLES AND GROUND THEM TOGETHER FOR 30 OR SO MINUTES, THIS WILL RESET THE CARS MEMORY, TEST VOLTAGE ON BATTERY WITH VOLT METER & IF IT IS BELOW 12.31V THEN CHARGE THE BATTERY , ONCE BATTERY CHARGED HOOK UP BATTERY LEADS (TO RIGHT TERMINALS) & ATTEMPT TO START CAR, IF ALL YOU GET IS A CLICK THEN LOCATE THE STARTER MOTOR & GIVE IT A FIRM WHACK WITH A HAMMER (SERIOUSLY) THIS WILL FREE UP THE STARTER & WILL ALLOW THE CAR TO CRANK

Check your throttle body . Remove the breather tube have someone hold the throttle to the W.O.T . THAKE A CAN OF CARB CLEANER AND CLEAN THE BUTTERFLY. clean the throttle plate and The housing real good by spraying the cleaner on a rag and rubbing it down real good try to get rhe rear part of the of the throttle plate. A lot of times the carbon acts like a choke and want let it start.. then try starting the car if it cranks and shuts off you still have a fuel delivery problem. . Check your fuel pump relay. And fuse. If that's not the problem next check to make sure you are getting fire a easy way to do this is take a plug wire off and take a screwdriver and stick the end of it in the plug wire and hold the the metal part of screwdriver to conduct a ground leave about a small gap in it and have someone spin the motor over like they are cranking it if you see spark you will know your getting fire . As advised by your mechanic, my advise is no different, in the gearbox there are what we term as teeth of different gears and synchronizers...being in such behaviour, your car needs a gearbox overhaul or replacement depending on which will cost you less
