I think those engines have a timing chain, (Zetec/Rocam engine). This means you don't need to change it unless it's an engine rebuild or it has half a million miles on it. Take a close look at the actual belt. Which direction do the grooves/teeth go? If the grooves travel all the away around the belt like train tracks, (first image), it is an auxiliary/serpentine belt. This is used to power the add on parts like the alternator. This won't affect the engine timing if it snaps but you need one fitted to pump the coolant around the engine and charge the battery. It is usually advised to change this belt on every major service. If the teeth are short and across the width of the belt, (second image), it is a timing belt. This 'will' damage the engine if it snaps. If you are not sure about it, change it and the idle pulleys. Then you know the one fitted is new.

Sounds like you don't really know what your doing, so best take into the shop for repair, should only cost $20 with parts.

I recommend you don't. Stay with the 1.3. To many things change on engine sizes. Years play a big difference.

Sorry, my US automotive database won't have any info on your vehicle. Maybe somebody else can find that info for you? My thought would be to pull fuse/s for hvac system till you figure out the problem?
