I agree with Stan there's normally a safety that prevents reverse from being activated that isn't needed for neutral high or low gear are you applying the brake when trying to go in reverse i think there's a extra cable that releases the reverse lockout. Hope this helps you.
Remember on early models there was a safety pin that had to be held to switch to reverse,,,your 500 does this automatically so check for safety pin hookup. Could be brush or
grass jammed in where it moves.

If the forward operation is fine, and you hear a nice cluck going revers, but no drive to the vehicle, and you can push the vehicle forward/backward which R engaged, then you have to open the gearbox: the Shaft Drive, where the reverse gear is sitting, has a pressed on gearwheel. This seems tobe broken, and the friction to the shaft is no longer given. cheap to replace.

the usual problem with those is either the switch itself or the magnetic hubs at the front wheels
The factory service manual will tell you how to check both

Solution#1 worked perfectly. It only took about 15 minutes all together.
the side panel removes easily. It just slides out of the other panel. Once you have removed the handle (Shifter) and the other two bracket bolts, just place it back into the shifter housing and move it around. I was amazed at how easy this was to repair. I also turned the ignition to the on position to see if it was changing gears and it was.

I tried this today and it worked. Pull the sideplate from the ATV so
that you have access to the gear shifter assembly. Unbolt the gearshift
assembly from the mounting bracket. There are two bolts at the rear
near the two rods that exit the assembly and three on the bottom. When
the bolts are out, remove the assembly from the mounting bracket. Hold
it in your hand and move the shift lever through all of the positions.
This won't actually shift the transmission, but it should free up the
rods in the assembly. Remount the assembly with the five bolts and it
should now be able to shift out of reverse.

Might need to change the needle bearings on the reverse shaft inside gearcase (transmission).

I have a 2006 Sportstman 500HO ATV, EFI. Sometimes it will run 100% correct, other times it will start, idle fine but then when giving it throttle will will start to surge almost like it's hitting a rev limited. Sometimes it will backfire and stall. I already replaced fuel filter, flushed the fuel lines and gave it fresh gas and installed a new spark plug, but no good. I also checked the throttle switch and it's not making contact to stall it. I download the service manaul and tested each sensor and they tested fine which is probablt why I get no check engine light.
This ATV is mainly used to plow snow in my driveway, no salt. It's used around my property but very lightly. It's still as clean as it was when I bought it and it doesn't have but about 40 hours on it.
