Sewing Machines - Recent Questions, Troubleshooting & Support

I can't answer your question directly but I think you can reasonably assume there probably is as asbestos was added to many things to make them more durable - drive belts (if not leather), gaskets and packing materials and even some of the thicker paints and coatings.
As long as these things remain in good condition, any asbestos content will not present a danger.
I think it unlikely the motor will contain asbestos, though there might be a small quantity in the lubricating felts of the motor bearings, if the motor uses sintered bronze self aligning bearings, but again this will present no danger as long as the felts are well oiled.

First, make sure the bobbin-winding spindle (located on top of your machine) has been pushed back to the left for sewing. If it is not in the correct position, the needle will not go down and pick-up your bobbin thread. ... Make sure the presser foot is up when seating the thread through the upper tension.

Why won't my machine pick up the bobbin thread? - Singer

Make sure that the thread is under the tension spring then thread it throgh the hole in the spoolcase, push the spoolcase retainer over to hold it in then turn the balance wheel towards you to pick up the thread through the hole in the needle plate, pull both threads back and sew away. I can supply a manual for this machine if you want one.

The Janome 4120qdc-b can be operated by hand, not need for a foot pedal. The machine comes with the foot pedal but when it's not installed, you can operate the machine by selecting the stop and go button. The machine has a speed regulator on the face of the machine.
