Brother Sewing Machines - Recent Questions, Troubleshooting & Support

Suspect uneven feed of top thread.

Manual for reference if needed.

Please check the following;
  • This machine has a horizontal spool. Try using a spool cap that is slightly larger than the spool. Verify spool is in proper orientation, and threaded per instruction. See page 19.
  • Embroider foot "Q" is installed per manual instructions. See page 32-33.
  • Feed dogs are down (supposed to happen when automatically table is installed but check and make sure).

There should be no looping of thread on bottom side. This would indicate top thread tension is too loose or uneven feed (spool cap and/or orientation). Suggest you preset tension prior to installing table using normal presser foot and single layer of same fabric and same thread. Select a straight short stitch (machine default) and tension 4. With a single layer of fabric, tension at 4 is likely high and you will see bottom thread loop on top side so slowly reduce tension until bottom thread no longer shows on top, Then switch to embroider setup and test run.

User guide is dated 11/13/2001, but doesn't show manufacturing date.

You could try contacting Brother to ask for assistance in identifying the date of manufacture.

This is an advanced computerized machine and your best bet is to call the dealer and find out what this error code means.

Most sewing machines have the same mode of operation. You'll have to learn things such as threading, inserting the bobbins, selecting the right stitches, using the presser feet, setting sewing speed, getting used to the foot pedals, etc. The Brother SE400 is one of the most popular sewing machines and not difficult to use. If you are completely new to using a sewing machine, I'd suggest that you buy a sewing machine book from Amazon. One of my favorite sewing machine books is "First Time Sewing: The Absolute Beginner's Guide: Learn By Doing - Step-by-Step Basics and Easy Projects" by Editors of Creative Publishing international. It teaches you everything you need about a sewing machine. Here are a few videos on youtube that can help you start sewing with your new sewing machine You can also find information from a few websites like the links below.

Are using embroider table?

Suspect uneven feed of top thread from spool. Check that top thread spool is correct orientation and spool cap is larger than spool.

See page B-25.

With presser foot up and needle up, select tension 4 and rethread top thread. Then make a long slow steady pull of top thread. It should advance smoothly through needle eye with even tension (no snagging). Now lower foot and again make long slow steady pull of top thread. It should advance smoothly through needle eye. Note difference in no tension (foot up) and tension select 4 (foot down).

Well... the manual doesn't say to lower the feed dogs before installing embroidery unit, but carriage operation is likely no different then free motion which requires feed dogs lowered. So I'd say lower feed dogs.

I didn't find exact model but following is what the Brother site gave me for LB6800...

First thought is top thread is not feeding evenly. Thread must unwind in proper direction and spool cap needs to larger than spool diameter else thread may snag. See manual pages 24+. and proper threading.

It may also simply be the top thread tension needs to be increased. Or bobbin thread is not feeding evenly. You might try different thread (top spool), bobbin, and as always... a new needle.
