SOURCE: stainless steel appliances ie. refrig, dishwasher & oven

a quality s/s cleaner and a clean cloth sould do the trick for most stains, WD-40 also works to remove the stains, works really well, also leaves afilm on the metal to prevent stains from adhering, just dont use paper towells, the tend to leave fibers behind. and also look closely at the s/s there is a GRAIN pattern in the metal just like wood would have a grain!! be sure to wipe in the direction with the grain not against.

SOURCE: finish on "stainless steel" door is deteriorating

Refrigerator was sold as 'stainless steel', but is not, a magnet won't stick to it.
There are many different alloys that are called 'stainless' steel but all of them have some chrome, some nickel and some steel. Depending on the strength of the magnet and the specific alloy, it may or may not adhere. Generally, the higher chrome and nickel content, the less magnetic it will be.
I think that the brushed surface of your fridge was coated with a kind of clear-coat to prevent fingerprints from adhereing to the brushed surface and that clear-coat is now missing in the areas of concern.
The only cure for tha would be the wholesale removal of the doors and the remaining clear finish and then respraying it with a quality clear finsh.
Ain't progress grand?
We considered all stainless stuff for our new home a couple of years ago, decided we liked black better and now hate that too.

SOURCE: Lime Away dripped down my stainless steel

Get a bottle of mineral oil and coat the front of the refrig . Then wipe off , after a few minutes . This will allow the oil to get back into the pours of the stainless steel . You may even want to let sit overnight . By adding mineral oil to the surface ( even permanently ) this will keep fingerprints and other solutions , such as lime away , drinks , food , etc , of the doors , with gentle wiping .

Here is a solution from a house keeping site ..
http://housekeeping.about.com/od/ideasbysurface/f/brownstainless.htm

Cleaning stainless steel can sometimes seem tricky, but is a very resilient surface. When problems happen, it is best to start with the basics to help repair the surfaces.
Baking soda mixed with liquid dish soap can make a good paste to gently rub on stains. Be sure to rinse the stainless steel surface thoroughly, and towel dry. If the stains still remain you can try vinegar. Remember to thoroughly rinse and towel dry. If stains still remain I recommend trying a stainless steel cleaner and polisher. Barkeeper's Friend is a good powder formula that can clean without scratching. Be sure to follow the directions, rinse thoroughly, and towel dry. These methods should help remove the discolorations.

You need to purchase stainless steel cleaner/polish, it is formulated to not leave streaks. This is the only thing I have found that works.

Water marks on stainless profiles

I have used Bon Ami or Bar tenders Stainless steel cleaner (found in the section of Ajax or Comet Cleaner). Put some of the powder on soft cloth, wet it a little & scrub mark lightly; use clean rag w/water to clean off powder. Then use stainless steal spray cleaner (like the one found at Bath & Beyond) and rub in with soft cloth. I have found that the pull-out stainless steel cleaner wipes are too wet & just smear. Good luck

Use a product like lime-away may help. These water spots are caused from calcium buildup. Lime-away or similar product will dissolve the calcium. Then use the stainless cleaner on it.
