Hi Christopher, it sounds like you have a broken motor coupler. It's the part that makes the connection between the motor and the transmission. It depends on the model on how you get access to the motor. Hope that helps.

If the washer agitates, but does not spin and empty, it is most likely the switch that is activated by closing the lid. Those Kenmores from that time had a problem with the bracket cracking on that switch and then it would come loose and could not be activated. If it will not agitate, spin or empty, it is most likely the clutch, which kind of looks like a hockey puck with six holes in it. If you’re handy at all it is about a $20 part, and about 1/2 hour of work.

You can try and tighten it or replace it. Could have loosen from vibration
