that sounds like oil getting into the cylinders, have them compression tested to see which, if any has low compression , then work from there to check wether valves, piston rings, head gasket , Have the OBD read as well, hopefully should give fault codes to help pinpoint the problem

If by the red light comes on upon cold startup, and the coolant level is fine, and it hasn't had time to get hot for said red light to indicate hot, then it's a stuck sending unit. If it always reads hot, the computer won't put it in cold start mode because it thinks the engine is already warmed up. That's the way it works. And especially if it isn't pushing any coolant from the radiator and over filling the reservoir, then it isn't over heating. IF it is overheating, I would first check that the fans are working properly and if they are, then I would go to the thermostat. And THAT means getting your hands dirty. You have to drain the coolant down just below the thermostat level, unbolt the thermostat housing, replace the thermostat and gasket and put it back together. The re-fill the radiator and reservoir with what you drained out.

It could be a vacuum leak. If it is a "drive by wire" setup, the throttle actuator motor or assembly could be stuck in the open position. I had a 2006 Ford Freestyle that had no mechanical connection between the gas pedal and the throttle plate. Ford called it drive-by-wire. When you press on the gas, it moves a control that tells the computer how far to open the throttle plate. An electric motor at the throttle assembly, controlled by the computer, would in turn open the throttle plate. This amount of air would then tell the computer how much gas to feed the fuel injectors. The mass air flow sensor got fouled in this and confused the computer. At idle and in gear, like when trying to park, if I touched the gas pedal, it would sometimes surge from 600 RPM to 1,500 RPM. Ford said that with this sensor fouled, The computer kept asking for more and more air. When the message finally made the connection, the computer was trying to open the the throttle a little bit FOR EVERY REQUEST FOR AIR. In other words, 5 or 6 times instead of once thereby opening it way too far momentarily. This happened in the first 2 weeks after I bought it. I bought this car used with an extended warranty. Ford replaced the mass air flow sensor for free. Two months later, I received a letter from Ford in Detroit Mi. saying that they were aware of the problem and would clean the sensor at any Ford, Lincoln or Mercury dealership free of charge. They just spent $700.00 U.S. on parts and labor for what could have been a 10 minute spray job. Good luck.
