Question about Saturn Cars & Trucks
A very simple solution to repairing all by yourself is getting help from handbooks, they're very detailed and complete in every way so for me it was my best source to repair
one of the top sites for this is https://big-manuals.com/

SOURCE: Shifter loose-Not the infamous bushing maybe broken cable
I have been suffering from the infamous deteriorated bushing for about 18 months now. Until now, have fixed it with tape. But I want to sell it now and need something more permanent. Anyway, I went to a junkyard today and managed to pull off the entire shift cable in about 1 hour. I'm a novice as well. A few clips at the transmission, pulling the bushing off at the gear shift. Hardest part was getting it through the firewall without totally destroying the rubber. If you have questions, e-mail me at whitehype@hotmail.com

SOURCE: 1999 Saturn SL1 manual...shifter cable bushing
Hello:
NAPA sells the replacement bushing ($20) better than Saturns $200 to replace both cables.
Good luck

SOURCE: The shifter/transmission on my manual 5 spd 1999 Saturn SL1
This just happen to me a few weeks ago. If you take out the center piece in the car you should be able to see that the actual shifter is no longer connected to the rod which goes into the transmission. It is an easy problem to fix, however it is not cheap. I was told that you have to buy a complete new kit($250.00) for the shifter, however my dad gave me a different solution. He took some wire, and made a spider web type thing to keep it connected. On my car it was a small round plastic piece that broke, but I cannot remember what it was actually called. This little piece is not available through Saturn by itself, only through a complete kit. Please ask questions if this is not clear enough. Thanks :)

SOURCE: Need to replace the shifter cable on a 2003 PT Cruiser
Have the EXACT same problem. 2005 Pt Cruiser w about 88,000 miles. Became hard to shift when cold and then bam ....something broke. Moves freely. I know I'm going to get screwed on this... what should it cost to have it fixed. The guy at a shop close by (figured close to make towing easier) started into this 'its a dealer only part and blah blah...at least an hour .... " He's going to send an estimate tomorrow. I'm in E. metro Atlanta

SOURCE: I have a 1999 chrysler concord and the shift cable
Cable is shot. Change the shift cable (cable from shifter to transmission) Also spray some WD40 on the shift linkage on the trans and work it back and forth to loosen it up before you put the new cable on. Good luck
