You have an Evap System problem and yes, this can cause poor gas mileage. Possible causes are:

  • Plugged vapor canister
  • Faulty vent solenoid
  • Pinched or blocked EVAP hose
  • Faulty FTP sensor

If you intend to troubleshoot/replace a faulty device in this system, you will need more help than I can give you here. I suggest you get ahold of the service manual for this vehicle (or visit Alldatadiy.com) for all the information you will need.

SOURCE: saturn ion fuel pump

Misnikie32 . .. I just had the same problem around the time you figured out your problem and I just got it fixed yesterday. For almost 3 weeks I had starting problems and I constantly smelled gas. The problem is a safety issue and the car needs to be recalled. The hose that is connected to the fuel pump is cracked. Since the hose is incorporated with the fuel pump, the entire mechanism needs to be changed. Look at spending about 700.00 . I informed saturn and told them my life was at danger. Please contact them on their website and goto your state's attorney general and launch a complaint, as well as the office of defective investigations and the NTSAB (google them). This needs to be brought to their attention and all owners of this car. I googled this and many other people are having this problem. Some are even on this forum. PLEASE DO THIS ! ! ! !

Most likely...one or more has gone bad, I believe this is yet another common problem with the Saturn ION...hhhhmmmm I wonder why they went out of business...

What is causing my 2006 saturn ion 2.2L to burn a lots of gas will a thermostat cause it to burn more gas?

code p 0128 refers to coolant thermostat--coolant temp below thermostat regulating temperature ===causes mechanical fault
For that code to appear the answer is most likely yes --it will affect fuel economy
Why because if the coolant is free to flow then the engine operating temp is not reached and so the engine coolant sensor reports that the engine needs more fuel and the air fuel mixture is adjusted to rich as a result
indicates a thermostat that is stuck open

Engine light came on. Car has 53000 miles. No noticeable prob when driving. What could light mean?

Could mean anything from a loose gas cap to a major engine problem, Go to your local auto parts store and get a free diagnostic scan and post back the code if it is not explained when tested.

Got a code for the EVAP purge.vent solenoid circuit on 2006 ION

The dirt road might have a little to do with it, but it's just a typical sensor that goes bad in the emmission system.
